I am working remotely (XP Home Remote Assistance) on my daughter's PC (Arizona to Maryland). She is encountering browser crashes and a consistent boot/startup error which has a banner: 16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem and an accompanying text box: C:\windows\system\sysnet.exe, The NTVDM CPU HAS ENCOUNTERED AN ILLEGAL INSTRUCTION, CS:055a IP:049d OP: 63 6c 69 65 6e, Choose 'CLOSE' to terminate the application. The PC is a Dell 4700 purchased new within the past 2-3 months.
CLEANUP, Ad-aware SE. CWShredder, Spybot S&D, Ewido Security Suite were all installed, updated and their scans detected targets for removal which was done; Trend Housecall and TrojanHunter did not detect anything. Windows Update is current. Upon completing your malware removal protocol the sysnet.exe boot/startup error still remains. Note: when Ewido scanned Netscape Navigator Ewido detected over 1000 infected objects and kept crashing, so I took the easy way out for now and removed Netscape Navigator (trying to keep Ewido running to remove the infected objects was too painful). Ewido subsequently ran clean.
