I´m new around here,I see you can help a lot,so I decided to post.....just about an hour ago I was using the internet and then psguard entered my computer! :) I started looking for help on how to remove it and I found some instructions in another forum,I was going to do what they said there,I was desperate cause I couldnt change my desktop image and I kept getting a message saying I had spyware.......I first ran ewido and then followed the instructions and one of the things in those instructions was to run smitrem.exe(that´s as far as I went) but when I did I got an error message and had to restart the computer, now, the computer shows no sign of psguard :tazz: but I want to be sure if it´s there....plus I think my computer has something wrong,I had a virus before, about 2 months ago and I did all of the steps we have to do,turn off system restore(I have winXP),use the safeboot and run scan and all that stuff....but ever since, when I turn on my computer I get a message that says that I have changed configuration in BOOT.INI,I get 2 windows, but I just forgot what they say....one of them is the one that appears when you use msconfig.....I will just put the hijackthis log and then I´ll restart so I can see exactly what those windows say.....I hope someone can help me! :)

I forgot to say that I´m mexican,I dont know if there would be a problem with that, since my computer is all in spanish and I guess there will be things the log will show in spanish :)

Welcome to GeekstoGo

Before you begin, take a read through the instructions and download the programs that I've advised. Save the below instructions in notepad or wordpad, because you also have to work in safe mode without networking support, so this page wouldn't be available then. You should not have any browsers on.

Please allow yourself a few spare hours. Below are instructions for a virus scan that can take longer then 2 hours. If you want, you may leave Ewido running while you go about your business. It's not essential that you sit and monitor it's progress.

If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below.

It is also important you don't miss a step and perform everything in the right order!!. .

Please download these additional files/programs. Do not run them unless instructed to do so.
Unless otherwise stated, they should be stored in same directory as the HiJackThis program.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Download & Install CleanUp!

Download Ewido Security Suite - Install & Update it's database but do not run it yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, download and update Ad-Aware SE Setup. Don't run it yet!

Unplug your computer from the Internet when you have finished downloading

I notice that you have two anti-virus programs on your machine. That's not a good idea!! :4-thatsba
Alike firewalls, anti-virus programs have conflicts co-existing with each other & may produce undesirable results. Please uninstall one of them.

REBOOT TO SAFE MODE
  • Restart the computer. The computer begins processing a set of instructions known as BIOS.
  • As soon as the BIOS has finished loading, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
  • Continue to do so until the 'Windows Advanced Options' menu appears.
  • Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, scroll to and select the menu item - Safe Mode.

Enable the viewing of Hidden files
  • From Windows Explorer, go to Tools>Folder Options>View tab.
  • Enable the option for `Show hidden files and folder´
  • Disable the option for `Hide file extensions for known types´
  • Disable the option for `Hide protected operating system files´
  • Click Yes to confirm & then click OK

Uninstall the following programs, if present, using Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs : HotBar
SearchUpgrader
WeatherOnTray
Media Gateway
PSGuard

Run a scan with HiJackThis & select(tick) the following & click [Fix checked] :

I have a few questions.....it doesnt say in your instructions, but do I have to turn off system restore? I know that´s what I do whenever I get a virus :)

also,I downloaded smitrem before and when I ran it,it said it couldnt find the file and just stayed there.....I could do nothing,so I had to restart the computer....why did this happen? if I have the same problem what should I do??

and I wrote down what appears when I start the computer,I get a message first that says that I have used the System congifuration utility and that it is on "diagnostic os selective" start mode and that I have to choose "normal start" to start my computer normally and undo the changes :) that´s been on my computer for about 2 months,it appeared after I eliminated the downloader.trojan virus...why would I want to undo things? that would get the virus back? I so confused....

well,I´ll go and do the things you told me and come back with results,I will do it without turning off system restore, since you didnt tell me to do so......if I should have turned it off,I´ll do it again :tazz:

IMPORTANT!:

Before we can proceed any further, please visit the Microsoft's Windows Update Page and install ALL Critical Updates for your system (except service pack 2 (SP2)). SP2 should only be installed on a fully disinfected system. At the minimum install at least SP1a for both XP and IE6. Without these updates your system is wide open to re-infection and we are both wasting our efforts to clean your system. After we have completed your clean-up, we will have you return to the Windows Update page and install SP2. We will also then advise you on how to better protect yourself online.

Please apply those updates BEFORE posting your next log. It is this forum's policy to stop the disinfection process until these basic updates are done. If during the updating process you get a message that your product key is invalid ....then you may not have a legitimate copy of Windows XP. Unfortunately it’s also this forums policy that we only address users with a legal copy of Windows XP.... therefore if you can not update Windows XP to SP1 we must stop the cleansing process here.

Thank you for your cooperation.

:) :) I do have a legitimate copy of windows XP and I´m a little confused now,I have sp1,I remember installing it and about sp2,when it first came out I asked the tech guy,the one who fixes my computer and he adviced not to install sp2,he told me that it made no difference and that after installing it some programs dont work anymore....it was weird, what he said, but then I asked a friend who knows about computers and she said the same thing, that some programs stop working and that she didnt install it.....the people I know, who have winxp havent installed sp2......so now I dont know what to do...... :tazz:

Platform: Windows XP (WinNT 5.01.2600)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 (6.00.2600.0000)

You don't appear to have SP1a as it would show above.

Try the Windows Updates and update to SP1a only. Do not attempt to install SP2 until we have you completely clean.

Without the basic service packs cleaning your system is a losing battle, since your open and vulnerable to re-infection.

:tazz: :) today I checked,I do have sp1! I´m just going to do what I should have done on the first place, have someone come and take a look at my computer.....it´s no use.....I´ve seen around here how people get a whole big explanation to their concerns,I´ve spent a lot of time looking through some other posts and I found how helpful people around here were,or that´s what I thought... I´ve seen how when people ask something they get a real answer instead of a whole bunch of instructions.....I now how to use a computer,I know about programming and a lot of other things, but we cant know everything and I thought if I asked for help here I would be able to fix my computer.......and I believe I can understand when someone explains something to me,I dont mean to be rude or anything, please dont think that, but it would be easier if instead of just telling me "install this" "install that" you would really read what I post and try to explain why I have to install something :) I know there is a lot of people who come here everyday to ask for help, but as i said,I´ve seen other posts and it is really different.....

thanks for your help anyway

lily, you must understand the service we provide on online help forums is free, all we ask in return is a little co-operation.

The instructions I provide are for people of all IT abilities, designed to be clear and concise. In no way are they challeneging anybodies iterlect.

Your log, as it is, isn't far from clean. Infact we're very near the end. Surely somebody of your IT literateness can understand the importnace of windows service packs. If you are 100% certain you have SP1a and that HJT is in some way inaccurate then please proceed with me to get your computer clean.

All I require from you is the Online Virus scan. I want to check if there is anything left that Ewido missed.

Secondly, I want to run a scan for malware that may be left or residing, that may have been missed by other anti-spyware programs.

#############
Please download Trend Micro™ Anti-Spyware for the Web Utility (by clicking the "Scan and Clean your PC" button).
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click the new icon on your desktop (tmas-web-scan.exe)
  • It will say "Loading TrendMicro definitions".
  • Once the definitions are loaded, the program will appear to close then re-open.
  • Click "Start Scan"
  • After it's done scanning, click "Scan Results"
  • Make sure all items found have a check next to them, then click "Clean Threats Now".
  • Click Exit.
Reboot your computer. In place of the TrendMicro icon will be a text file called "Antispyware.log", please double-click that log and copy the entire contents and paste them in your next post.

Perform an online scan in Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
  • Click on the Scan your PC button & a 'pop up' window shall appear. * ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
  • Click On 'Scan Now'
  • Enter your e-mail address & click 'Scan Now' ...begins downloading Panda's ActiveX controls.- 8MB
  • Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
    * You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report. Click on see report
  • Then click Save report
  • Post the contents of the report in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
