Okay, I've gone through all the prep stuff recommended at registration. I am still having that crazy "winantispyware" pop up that changes my open IE screen to a window asking me to start the scan. I've read through other replies to this problem, but it appears every one is a bit different, so I thought it best to post my hijackthis file here...

Thanks in advance for the help!

Shari

  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning.
    It should look like this

    VundoFix V2.13 by Atri
By using VundoFix you agree that you are doing so at your own risk
    Press enter to continue....

  • At this point press enter one time.
  • Next you will see:

Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff

  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {52B1DFC7-AAFC-4362-B103-868B0683C697} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\geedd.dll (file missing)

Shari: As long as the Vundofix.exe starts, you should be able to complete all of the steps below, since the file was missing with the last removal attempt, the Vundofix could not find the file specified. There appears to be another infection, so let's try this again. If a step does not work, note it, and move to the next step(if possible)

Okay, lets try this again.... :tazz:

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.
  • Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.

Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

Below are the reports you requested. Here are the problems I encountered while doing the process:
1. The first and last files you mentioned were not on the list to place a check next to (both referring to vtsqo.dll)
2. When I closed Hijackthis and pressed a key, I didn't get the blue screen of death, so I manually rebooted the system.

Other than that, I was able to perform each step as described.

My Adware report:

Shari: It's not uncommon for there to be multiple infections of Vundo. I am just guessing here, I think that you did not click FIX CHECKED after selecting the items with HijackThis? Let's try this again. Don't worry, I will not give up until your system is clean... :tazz:

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.
  • Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.

Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\mljjg.dll

  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.

  • Next you will see:

Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):C:\WINDOWS\system32\gjjlm.*
This will be the vundo filename spelt backwards. for example if the vundo dll was vundo.dll you would have the user enter odnuv.*

  • Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Thanks for your patience. You all must get tired of this pesky vundo deal.

I forgot to mention the last time I was doing this, the winantispyware window opened and interrupted me. This time it went off without a hitch. Below are my results, and thank you once again!

Shari: Things are looking much better now. Is your computer running better now? Let's get rid of a folder that we found in the Active scan and run Ewido in safe mode to ensure everything is gone. Let's get started...

After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please print out the instructions here (or save it in Notepad) so that you can follow along more easily.

1.
  • Open Ewido and update to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
  • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates

2. Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
If you are having problems, additional instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to start Windows in Safe mode.

3. Please enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:
  • Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
  • Double-click on the My Computer icon.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • After the new window appears select the View tab.
  • Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
  • Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
  • Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

4. Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them if still present:

C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\Totem Shared <===this folder

5. Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

6.
  • Open Ewido, Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

Restart your computer.

Please reply to this post with a new HiJackThis log and the report from the Ewido Scan.

Log looks clean...great job! :tazz:

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
* CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Disable and Enable System Restore. - Since you are using Windows XP you should disable and enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to disable and enable system restore here:

Windows XP System Restore Guide

=====================================================
Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detection and Removal Programs:

You already have 2 good Anti-spyware detection programs -SpyBot, and Ad-Aware. It is important that all of these programs are updated, and you run full system scans on a regular basis.

Please see the following tutorials below:

How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware
Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

Prevention Programs:

I recommend the following two programs that will help prevent an infection:

Spywareblaster - SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
Spywareguard - SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Both programs will compliment one another.

Other necessary Programs and steps:

Anti-virus program - It looks like you have an anti-virus program. It is important that this program is updated, and you run a full system scan on a regular basis.

More Secure Browser - Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - If you are a Windows users you must visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This site is a Microsoft site that will scan your computer for any patches or updates that are missing from your computer. It will then provide a list of items that it can download and install for you. This will ensure your computer has all of the latest security updates available installed on your computer and is secure from any known security holes.

Please read the following:
So how did I get infected in the first place? and Spyware Aid's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.

JC :)

Thank you SO much for your help! I have done all the steps you have suggested and am currently downloading Firefox. I consider myself pretty computer savy and can't believe I haven't checked into other web browsers; so I am very grateful for the information and suggestions. I am also amazed by this site. Maybe I'll look into becoming a volunteer...
