Good to see you again silvermine :)

Lets get the malware then go after the speed of the computer

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://ms101.mysearc...sa/srchlft.html
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://red.clientapp...://my.yahoo.com
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://ms101.mysearc...sa/srchlft.html

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked

:tazz: yes yes I know your probably sick of this scan

Please run this online virus scan:
Panda Active Scan You need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Once you get to the Panda site, scroll down a bit and click on Scan your PC
  • A new window will appear; click on Check Now!
  • A new window will appear; fill in the boxes (Country, State, email addy)
  • Click on Scan Now! >
If you have never used ActiveScan before, you will be prompted to install an ActiveX control (asinst.cab) : click on Install. Panda will install the component, and then install the latest signature files.
  • From "Select a device to scan...", choose "My Computer"
  • Allow the scan to run. It'll take a while.
  • When complete, click on "See Report", and then on "Save report"; save it to a convenient location.
  • I will need you to post that report in your next reply; simply open the text file, then copy/paste the content here. Also post a new Hijack log

Thanks :)

On another note - my laptop saves my log in on this site - but my desk top does not. How do I get the desktop to save it?

Thanks for your help. :tazz:

The log looks fine. Uninstall Ewido. That should speed startup a little. There are a couple optionals but nothing thets going to make a big difference . Can you tell me the make and model of the computer and the amount of RAM it has? Has it always been slow. Anything like popups or redirects on the computer?

No, it has not always been slow. It's been about 2-3 months and getting worse. I have cable internet - slow, and general computing, start up all slooooow. I'm not getting any popups or redirects. I was going to take it to the computer shop (they built it for me.) Could I need driver updates or something like that? Thanks.

Hi silvermine...I'm wannabe1 and I'll try to help you get your machine running a little faster.

First, I'll need a HiJackThis log...only I need you to generate a Start Up list for me. To do this, Start HJT and on the Main window, click Misc Tools and choose Generate a StartupList log...you need not check either of the checkboxes. Post that here for me.

Hello wannabe1 :tazz: Pleased to meet you.

First of all let me tell you that since starting this thread, my daughter has added Yahoo sh*t errrr stuff to the already slow computer. I realize this is probably adding insult to injury.

Hi silvermine...

Sorry I'm so long getting back to you...had to work for a bit and your post got moved...I lost it :tazz:

Are both of your firewalls running? If they are, you should stop one of them. The Windows firewall uses less resource so if I had to choose, I would shut down the Zone Alarm. Your choice though, as long as we can pare it down to one.

You have a lot of apps running on startup which are running on the background. Many of these can be stopped...(Yahoo is among them...shhhh...don't tell your daughter :) ) They can always be opened when you want them, they don't have to be running all the time.

Click Start then Run and type msconfig and press "Ok". Click the "Start up" tab (top-far right). Press Alt and PrtScrn at the same time. Then open Paint (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Paint) and click "Edit" and then "Paste". Save the image as Jpeg and post it here for me.

Hi

How about you read Easy Xp Tweaks Second Edition tweaks 2, 3, 7, 13, 19, 23, 30, and 31 are the ones most aimed at system performance.

Also if you what more performance
Start < All Programs < Startup delete every thing you find here they are not needed, they are just added my come programs and load when you start windows.

You can also stop some other program form loading with windows, this will no affect the programs just they will not have part of then load with windows. Run as scan with Hijack this and tick those listed not because they are bad but because they slow your computer down.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroCheck] C:\WINDOWS\system32\NeroCheck.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

I also want to look at that picture that wannabe1 asked for.

By the way since you might be interested my computer boots in 24 secondes.

Hello - and thank you both for your replies. :woot:

First, yes, two firewalls were on. I shut down ZoneAlarm but did not uninstall it.(I have been so busy trying to fix my laptop I have really ignored this desktop. Plus as slow as it is it has been very frustrating to use.)

Attached are the Startup pics. It took 3 to see them all.

I will read the easy tweak thread. Looks good.

This is what was on the Start<All programs<Startup:
hp.psc 2000 series (printer)
Natural Color Load (monitor related)
officejet 6100
MediaCardCompanionMonitor
The office jet I don't believe I have anymore. When I click on delete, the message says it will only remove the shortcut. :tazz:

I stopped the 3 programs you listed.

Hello silvermine...

In addition to the 3 applications you have already turned off...uncheck the following in the System Configuration > Startup list...

ypager
wkufind
hpgs2wnd
zlclient (if not using Zone Alarm)
incmail (if not using incredimail)

Please post me the whole file name of ccApp. It is probably associated with your Norton application, but can also be added by certain viri...the file name will determine which it is.

Restart your machine. You will get a Selective Startup window on restart...check the box in the lower left corner and click "Ok".

Now, Run Disk Cleanup (under System Tools) and then run Disk Defragmenter (also under System Tools) and reboot when both have finished. Let me know if your machine is running better.

1) You have tons of items on your startup menu. As said before, remove as many as possible.

2) Did you check in Task manager (ctrl+alt+del) > performance, whether you have a process which is always there and is heavy on your cpu?

3) Did the problem start after the installation of SP2? I have seen a number of computers slowing down after this installation. Try to remove it, just like you remove any other program (control pannel > add/remove programs) and see if there is any difference.

4) I have seen a number of cases in which antivirus caused computers to slow down dramatically, even when not scanning. Disconnect from the net, remove your antivirus and check your computer.

5) There can be program corruptions due to incorrect installation and removal of programs. Try to run a registry maintenance program (I prefer Advanced System Optimizer. It's a terrific program and you can download it for 30 days trial period)

6) We know nothing about your computer. Is it possible that you have more then 1 ram modules and one isn't working? Check ram count upon start up to find out. If you can, download Everst and run a benchmark of your ram. It is not as thorough as memtest but a lot easier. If you have ram problem it will show.

Generally speaking, lots of things can cause the slowdown, either hardware or software. All the steps I suggested are easy to do and shouldn't take much time.

Just an obvious addition to my last post: run Diskcleaner and Defragmantation of your disk. I assume your disk isn't too full.

Hello again wannabe1...
Here is the file name of ccApp. O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ccApp] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe"
I cannot figure out how to get a selective startup window on restart. There is no box to check. I see 3 choices of F8, F9 and delete. I ran the Disk Defragmenter and Disk Clean up under normal mode.
It seems to be running faster after a quick check.

I do not know how to know which items on the startup menu I can delete. (There are MANY.)

Oh yeah, On another note - my laptop saves my log in on this site - but my desk top does not. How do I get the desktop to save it?

It's late for me so I will work on y.a 's messages tomorrow.
Thanks for your help.
