Correction - I allowed this link to replace the existing one and it is redownloading.
Installed - rebooted - still no sound.

I'm betting your onboard audio is toasted.

Let's try one last thing before we write it off. Go to Device Manager and right click on the sound device. Choose Properties and then click on the Driver tab. Click on the "Update Driver" button...tick the radio button next to "Yes, this time only" and click "Next"...have the wizard search for the best driver.

If it comes back with nothing, you should probably invest in a new sound card.

Let me know how it goes.

Go to Device Manager, right click on each device that is marked and choose "uninstall" and accept the change. Reboot and let Windows reinstall them.

Let me know how it goes.

According to the Everest log, the drivers included with Windows XP should run everything in your machine...they are all supported by Microsoft. Still leaning towards a bad sound device.

Well...uninstall the sound device whether it has a ! or ? or not. Anything else with one of those marks by it gets uninstalled.
