I have gone through all the steps described in the "You must read this before ..." page.

My problem is that AVG keeps on detecting rdriv.sys and msdirectx.sys even though each time I have tried the heal, delete or send to vault options.

There are a couple of infections on here, so lets make a start. Please print out these instructions for reference as the fix progresses.

Please download LQfix.exe and save it to your desktop.

• Double-Click LQfix.exe and click Next > Next > Install.
• Leave the default settings, if you change them, the fix will Fail!
• Now make sure the "Launch LQfix" box is checked.
• Click the Finish button, after clicking the Finish button the fix will start.
• Follow the on-screen prompts.
• Your system will now reboot afterwards.
• Please be patient after the reboot, there is a script running in the background that needs to complete.

Now do a scan with HiJackThis and post a new log by using Add Reply

As I was doing this AVG kept on popping up saying Virus Detected C:\WINDOWS\system32\rdriv.sys Trojan horse Generic.GM.

OK, Thats looking a bit better, now for the next stage of the fix

Please follow all instructions as specified. Print these instructions to ensure all are followed.

Please download the following programs, if you already have Ewido, ensure it is updated., but do not run them yet:

* rdrivRem.zip

• Unzip it to your desktop.

* Ewido Security Suite

• Install ewido security suite
• Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
• The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
• The program will now go to the main screen
• You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
• On the left hand side of the main screen click update
• Click on Start
• The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed
• After the updates are installed exit Ewido.

* CleanUp!

• Install it.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight "Safe Mode" then hit enter.

1.) Please go into the rdrivrem folder and double-click rdrivRem.bat to run the program - follow the instructions on the screen. After it's complete, rdriv.txt will be created in the rdrivRem folder.

2.) Double-click the Ewido Security Suite icon to run the program.

• Click on scanner
• Click Complete System Scan
• Let the program scan the machine

While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose "remove", then put a check next to "Perform action on all infections" in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report

• Click Save report
• Save the report to your desktop
• Exit Ewido

3.) Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
**If it asks if you want to reboot or log off press NO.

4.) After Cleanup! is finished, run HijackThis. Place a check next to the following items, if found, and click FIX CHECKED:

Also, Make sure your Anti-Virus program is working properly - you can turn on and off auto-protect, etc.

6.) Run BOTH of these online virus scans (NOT at the same time!):
ActiveScan
TrendMicro's HouseCall - check "Auto Clean"

Save the results from ActiveScan.

Please delete all existing downloads of rdrivrem tools and logs from your system, then download the latest version from

here

Unzip this to your desktop.

1.) Please go into the rdrivrem folder and double-click rdrivRem.bat to run the program - follow the instructions on the screen. After it's complete, rdriv.txt will be created in the rdrivRem folder.

Reboot into normal mode and paste the new rdriv.txt file for me here as well as a startup list as detailed below.

Create a Startup List

• Open HiJackThis
• Click on the "Config..." button on the bottom right
• Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
• Check off the 2 boxes next to the Box that says "Generate StartupList log"
• Click on the button "Generate StartupList log"
• Copy and past the StartupList from the notepad into your next post

Hi There

OK, we are getting somewhere now.

here are the next set of instructions

*Click here to download Killbox by Option^Explicit.
*Double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
*In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\xpjava.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\msdirectx.sys


*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Run HijackThis and put checkmarks in front of he following items.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe xpjava.exe

Boot back to normal and copy the part in bold below into notepad. Save it as unlegacy.reg (set filetype to "All Files")

No Problems, we are making progress and this step should take care of the msdirectx rootkit. We will have a few more steps to go through after that, but we will soon be done.

One additional step I would like you to take before running the ewido scan is as follows

Using windows Explorer, delete this Folder

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SecTaskMan

Then please do a search for any other SecTaskMan Folders and delete them also.

I looked at the link you gave, but its a bit redundant as we have got rid of rdriv.sys completely using the tool you downloaded - much easier than digging about in the registry. The msdirectx rootkit is next on the list, then we will run some batch files to get rid of the last few infections that are hooked in to your OS. There are many ways of doing this sort of stuff, but we have found that the techniques used here, more often than not become the standard techniques.
