Very cool forum! Good to see I'm not the only one with these darn probs! I'm yet another NEWBIE here, and I can see that you 'puter guys are obviously WAYYYY above mortals like me...so perhaps you can help.

I reviewed the 'must read before posting hijack this log' message and followed all their instructions, to include running updated versions of adaware, cwsshredder, and spybot. I have also rebooted, fixing numerous problems. Already I think I have helped with the sluggish problem.

My biggest peeve is this search bar that appears magically (and annoyingly!) at the bottom of my IE browser. Properties shows: http://search200.com...h/newpass2.html. I'm also still looking for a pop-up blocker that really works...including a feature to add to the 'black list' for particularly sneaky pop-ups.

I've JUST run 'Hijack this' and will paste the log at the end of this post.

ANY ideas to help clean this silly 'puter would be MOST appreciated!

THANK you!

C:\Documents and Settings\JSCLA\Application Data\PARTPR~1 <= entire folder that holds compplus.exe
C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\WinTools <= entire folder
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\This sign blah love <= entire folder

Then check if you see any strange Tasks in Task Scheduler, with names like:

Then check the properties of these tasks and let me know.

Post a new HijackThis log when you are done.

Wow...I am truly awed by your knowledge on this stuff, Petier... I did everything you said, and I was amazed there was so much crap on this 'puter! 36 items?? Wow! I opened up IE and for the first time, I didn't get that pesky search bar! UNBELIEVABLE! 'Puter still stays on the 'welcome' screen for a long time before booting...Then I get this strange message that it couldn't find some file named by an apostrophe followed by 3 small font-size squares, followed by more stuff including small squares. This is a SMALL price to pay for the overall improved response of the computer, though.

THANK YOU for the FAST and COMPREHENSIVE reply! I owe you more than a beer!

Hey Pieter--
Pardons on the previous spelling of your name!

Alas...I fear I have done something wrong, as I JUST got the pesky search200 bar. Did manage to find Hijack this 1.99, though.

Hope you can make sense of this.

MUCHO thanks, once again!
JT

I'm afraid you forgot to remove one folder. I'll try to be more clear. If there is anything you don't understand or can't find, just holler.

Check the items listed below in HijackThis, close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.hgbfxzutn...pybihXsUCz.html

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = http://www.websearch...spx?tb_id=50032

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {87766247-311C-43B4-8499-3D5FEC94A183} - (no file)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1B0B06AB-F9D3-D748-FFE5-E9C525A9A72A} - C:\DOCUME~1\JSCLA\APPLIC~1\PARTPR~1\PureStart.exe
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {40C8F30D-640D-D310-A9DC-F223E17C3FE6} - C:\DOCUME~1\JSCLA\APPLIC~1\PARTPR~1\compplus.exe (file missing)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinTools] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools\WToolsA.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MyPointsPointAlert0] "C:\Program Files\MyPoints_PointAlert\MyPointsPointAlert0.exe"

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [objheckwipehold] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Rectglueobjheck\Skip Bat.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Mp3hope] C:\DOCUME~1\JSCLA\APPLIC~1\CLOSED~1\dartwindowsave.exe

O23 - Service: WinTools for IE service - Unknown - C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\WToolsS.exe (file missing)

Reboot into safe mode and delete:
C:\Documents and Settings\JSCLA\Application Data\PARTPR~1 <= entire folder that holds the file PureStart.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\JSCLA\Application Data\\CLOSED~1 <= entire folder that holds the file dartwindowsave.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Rectglueobjheck <= entire folder

Another possibility is that there is a folder called C2media on your computer. If so delete that one as well.

And do you know what this is, or where it came from:
MyPointsPointAlert

Pieter

Hello again Pieter--
Whoops...Sorry I missed that one. Went back and did the fixes you told me to do. I'm HOPING I got them all this time. So far, so good. No more pesky Search200 bar!

No sign of a c2media folder...I hope that's good.

The MyPointsPointAlertn is some deal my wife signed up for that gives her points for clicking on junk. She says she gets $25 every couple months just for clicking on spam. I told her the program is suspect...but she said it's probably worth it. Not sure on this one. If this is causing some of my probs, we may have to drop it. What is your opinion?

Also, getting that message at boot-up that says windows can't find or run the file referenced by '### ### ###J### (where "#" is actually a small box). After this window, I click OK, I get a message saying it can't load or run the file or folder named '### ### ###J###' and to delete reference to it in the registry. Does this make any sense?

Thanks again!
JT

If it is some click program I don't see why it should run straight from boot. I suppose you can start it when you need it?

Try this.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.ytnsetsnd...pybihXsUCz.html

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\System32\Userinit.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MyPointsPointAlert0] "C:\Program Files\MyPoints_PointAlert\MyPointsPointAlert0.exe"

Let me know if that takes care of the error.

Regards,

Pieter

Hi Pieter--
Not sure about the Mypoints program. I just found their website at http://www.mypoints....37eeb8a41d45191. Looks like you should be able to log in when desired, though I'm suspicious that it might somehow install some sort of program on the computer to run at boot. Hmmmm.

I did what you said....though I still have that minor error with the "windows can't find or run the file referenced by '### # ### ###J### (where "#" is actually a small box)." Then "can't load or run the file or folder named '### # ### ###J###' " and to "delete reference to it in the registry"

I'm less concerned with that and still THRILLED that the search200 is GONE!

THX AGAIN for the very fast and comprehesive replies!

In HijackThis click Config > Misc Tools > Generate Startuplist.

That will open a text file.
Could you please post the content?

I have no ideas left where these boxes could be coming from.

For my information: what language version of Windows are you using?

Regards,

Pieter

Greetings Pieter!
Many apologies for this slow reply. I had generated a start-up log and THOUGHT I posted a pretty comprehensive reply only minutes after your last reply. When I looked today, I didn't see my reply posted....Hence no reply to the reply...Suddenly, the light is growing brighter here.

Of side importance, we have gotten numerous blue screens of death after my wife has accessed various "My Points" sites. I asked if she had to 'install' something when she signed up, and she said yes. I told her she might have to do it again, since I disabled some of the 'mypoints' features. I also told her this might be somewhat of an invasive program, getting into the guts of the computer.

Also just accessed MSCONFIG. Found I could uncheck the boxes for the ############J##### (where #'s are little squares) in the startup tab so that windows didn't try to load it on start up. That has eliminated that wierd message. Maybe I need to do something else.

At any rate, I have generated a startuplist and I'm posting below. Now that I have disabled the suspect loading using MSCONFIG, I'm not sure there is much value to the startuplist log below. I'll post it just in case.

Anything special I need to know about Mypoints or why the computer seems to crash on occasion now?

Thx again MUCHO for all your help!

JT

This might help.

You have a few LOP.com tasks starting from Task Scheduler:

A0E56B769192E9DE.job
AD4971619026F0CD.job
CB785D529C6BEBFE.job
FE9F9B3598C8459D.job

Since we removed all the related files these may be causing the errors.

You can remove those tasks.

Pieter

Hello Pieter--
So sorry to take your time and pardon my ignorance, but what's the easiest way to disable the tasks you mentioned?

Thx again!

Start > Control panel > Scheduled Tasks > rightclick the ones I listed and choose Remove.

(Removing tasks is easy, adding isn't, so take care to get just those 4)

Hi Pieter-

Thx again for your words! I did what you said, and our Task Scheduler only had "Add Scheduled Task" and "Symantec NetDetect" listed. Is this OK?

No sign of the "Lop.com" tasks (whatever they are) of:

A0E56B769192E9DE.job
AD4971619026F0CD.job
CB785D529C6BEBFE.job
FE9F9B3598C8459D.job

I'm hoping this isn't bad. If these items show up somewhere else, is there anything else you'd recommend I do?

Thanks again for ALL your help! You've been awesome and I'm gonna see what I can do to get you a raise!

Happy New Year!
