Hi guys,
My laptop recently does really strange things. I open a media file (mp3 or mpg) and windows media (or winamp) opens and shows up on the screen. Then without playing the song/movie, it just closes. It just shows up and closes when i try to open any media file.

If you guys can help, i'll be so grateful! Thanks!!

Have you tried uninstalling and then reinstalling winamp and see if that makes a difference?

If that doesn't work, you may have some malware/virus issues. Wouldn't be a bad idea to check it out, so I suggest you head on over to the Malware Forum and go from there. Make sure you read the START HERE first!

If you are still having problems after having been given a clean bill of health by the malware specialist, then come back and post in THIS THREAD and we will try some other options.

Good luck!

Uninstalling and reinstalling makes no difference. I've done a malware and virus check, nothing that made a difference to the situation.

I really think its a software/windows problem. Also - winamp doesn't even install now (it starts to copy files and install, but it just closes 1/2 way. No errors, nothing. Just closes the installer)

Please help me, i really need this thing working!!

Get the trial of Tune Up 2006 here

Tune Up 2006 Trial

Run disc clean up then registry clean up then click optimize to run reg defrag, which needs a reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to optimize the computer, select computer with an internet connection from the drop down menu, this also requires a reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to accelerate downloads, select the speed just above your actual connection speed, this requires a reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to run system advisor

Click start then all programmes, accessories, system tools to run disc defragmenter

Click start then run, type sfc /scannow then press enter to replace the system files, you need the XP CD and get a blue progress bar, when the bar goes, reboot

Install Winamp from here

Will it remove any settings?? I've also got a TCP/IP optimiser already, will this make everything even better?
BTW I've expanded my number of outgoing connections per unit time from 10 to 50 via a patch, will this optimiser change that too????

Thanks for your answers

You can leave the accelerate downloads

None of the others will affect data

It's to clear unnecessary files and optimize the drive

did exactly as you said, still have the same problem. Winamp still doesn't install...as soon as the green progress bar appears, it closes.

Please give me any other ideas!!

Repair XP using this method

http://www.geekstogo...ws-XP-t138.html

Windows XP repair feature won't delete your data, installed programs, personal information, or settings. It just repairs the operating system

You will need to re-install everything from Microsoft Update after ths, though try installing Winamp before doing the updates

If the XP CD has SP2 already on it, otherwise no, but it will be one of the updates

Hopefully the repair will replace whatever is missing, and allow you to install Winamp

Probably best to do the repair then install Winamp then do the updates
