Hope I'm doing this correctly.

I have run through the full list of fixes on the maware "start here" page. I was able to get several things targetted and removed that I was unaware of. I didn't see any hint of winfixer at the conclusion of my computer purging, but then this morning (did the cleaning late last night) the first thing I got were winfixer pop-ups.

This is really insidious. None of the standard file names for winfixer yield anything, as I have seen several people with the same problem. When I try to find files or registry keys matching theirs, I don't see any.

I haven't had a single other program run yet today but explorer, and the winfixer pop-ups are currently on my screen, so hopefully this running of Hijack will point right to the evil little buggers.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.

• After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
• Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
• Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

I seem to be having trouble getting my comp to boot up into safe mode...

The F8 menu doesn't give a safe mode option, just a choice of boot sources (disk, IDE, DVD, and network). This is odd because I recall having the safe mode option in the past. Perhaps I'm recalling a different comp...

msconfig was showing up in your HJT log. Wanted to make sure that no items were "hidden" from me !!!


Next time you want to boot up, run msconfig (click on start---> Run. Type in "msconfig" and hit enter). Click on General tab and then click on "Normal Startup".

Let us clean up your PC a little bit.

Delete the following programs and the associated folders, which you downloaded during the cleaning up process -

Run Hijack This and click on scan. The following items need to be fixed -

Close all windows other than Hijack This. Check the boxes next to above items and click on Fix checked.

This will not delete the programs from your PC. This will only disable the programs from running at Start up and result in a faster PC. You can always run the programs manually by using the respective exe files or the shortcuts.

After this, please visit Windows security and critical updates and get all the updates and patches and install them on your PC.


Since your PC is currently clean, create a system restore point. A system restore would enable you to revert to the settings on the PC when the restore point was created. It is also a good idea to flush all earlier system restore points which may be containing infected files.

A. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

B. Restart your computer.

C. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

System Restore will now be active again.




Reboot the PC and post a fresh HJT log.
