inf

and hit enter.

A folder will open. Locate the item - ie.inf. Double click on it. This will reinstall IE.

Open Add or Remove Programs (click on Start ---> Settings ---> Control panel. This should be the 3rd item). Click on Add/Remove Windows Components.

In the new window which opens, Uninstall IE. Uncheck the box next to IE and then follow the instructions.


Reboot the PC.

You may also try this Firefox Mozilla Browser . Firefox is a much safer browser than IE.

Uninstalled IE. Could not reinstall IE successfully. Installed Mozilla Firefox, but it would not connect to the Internet. Still can't access the CD drive from normal mode (only in safe mode, through the task manager).

I think it is time for drastic action.


Please go to this page - http://www.windowsreinstall.com/

Scroll right down to the bottom of the page and choose your version of Windows (XP Pro). In the next Page, under the topic Windows XP professional Install Guides - choose the option Repair Install.

This will give detailed instructions on how to do repair install of Windows. Repair install will reinstall Windows on your PC. However, it leaves all data and user softwares untouched. So you will have all the stuff intact on your PC.

Please pay attention to Step 3 in the process where when the PC prompts - "Press any Key to boot from CD" - dont press any key. You dont want to boot from the CD but you want to install Windows.

Once the Windows has been installed, please visit Windows security and critical updates and get the updates. Do a custom install and then choose only the option Service Pack 1a (SP1a). Dont install Service Pack 2 (SP2) at this stage. We will install SP2 once everything has been resolved.

After this is done, please visit Panda and do an online scan. Save the scan report.

Run Hijack This and post a fresh HJT log along with Panda scan report.

How do you connect on to internet ??


Are other programs able to get onto the net ?? like program updates etc. ???

My home computer connects via cable modem. I am currently using my office laptop at home to work through the fixes. I am aware of at least one program on the home computer (a CD title database) that can currently access the Internet successfully.

My current hard drive has a number of Word documents, as well as a large portion of my CD collection that I would like to save (I have invested a substantial amount of time in ripping my CD's). Any suggestions for a work-around? (E.g., burning the files to CD, and re-formatting the HD, or getting a new HD and transferring the files.) How would I ensure that the virus would not be transferred in the process?

Okay, problems again. Got the Windows security updates. After restarting the computer, no Internet access. High volume of system idle processes. CD drive still does not work from normal mode. Went back to safe mode and ran WinXPfix and reinstalled my ISP software. Restarted and still could not access Internet through Mozilla or IE. I'm guessing I have to run through the repair reinstall process again, then run WinXPfix and reinstall the ISP software to reconnect. Let me know whether this is correct, and what steps to take next. Thanks.

Can you open Device Manager (Right click on My Computer on your desktop, then click on properties ---> hardware ---> device manager). Please check all items to make sure that they are functioning properly. In case any of the items are not functioning properly, let me know.

Here's what I found:

The ALi PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)

I recently installed a USB 2.0 card. Could this be the source of some of the problems? I believe I downloaded the correct drivers from the Internet. Is it possible that the drivers were lost during the repair reinstall?
