I am running Windows 98 with 320 megs of ram. When I use the computer it gets very slow at times and I check the free ram and it may say it only has 60 or 30 megs free, yet there is 320 installed. I even have a memory accelerator program to free up ram, which it does, but many times my comp almost freezes and programs do not respond.

I got rid of Norton due to many conflicting problems and now run Avast antivirus software. I also have Spybot, Adaware and AOL Spyware protection software, which I run all the time to check for problems and nothing really ever seems to show up.

What can can possibly be done to help fix this ram problem? Should some setting be changed? So many times when I click on an icon, the computer says the program is not responding or memory is drastically low, then I need to reboot the machine.

I would appreciate any help.

Have you changed the default setting for virtual memory from Windows managed

This will rebuild rather than restore the registry and also replace missing or corrupt system files

Boot the PC and keep tapping F8 right after the beep until you get options, select command prompt only, type scanreg.exe /fix then press enter, it will run through a few screens then say registry repaired. Press enter then press ctrl + alt + delete keys together to reboot.

When it has loaded, click start, all programmes, accessories, system tools, system information, tools then run system file checker and replace any files it asks for from the 98SE CD then reboot.

Click start, programmes, accessories, system tools to run disc clean up then from system tools, run disc defragmenter

I have never changed my virutal memory. It still says (recommended) for windows managed.

Should I still do the scanreg.exe /fix thing?

You can go with disc clean up then disc defragmenter to see how it runs

Scanreg and system file check will make sure the registry and files are intact, but it isn't desperate, though it will only take 15 mins to do both
