Need some help please. Can't get rid of desktop hijack. Still receiving Norton alert. I have ran all the preparation steps and it still keeps coming back. Takes control of desktop and keyboards. Can't type and desktop icons only shows properties and will not respond. Used all the removal tools nothing seems to work. My next tool is a hammer.

Thanks
Randy

Please download Trend Micro™ Anti-Spyware for the Web Utility (by clicking the "Scan and Clean your PC" button).
  • Save it to your desktop.

Download KillBox http://www.greyknigh...spy/KillBox.exe.

Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. For each of the following files below, check the box that says 'Unregister .dll Before Deleting' if it's not grayed out. Copy and paste each of the following into KillBox (hitting the X button for each file - Choose YES when informs you the file will be deleted on Reboot. Choose NO when it asks if you want to reboot):

C:\Documents and Settings\randy\Start Menu\Programs\Web Search.lnk
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ptainfo1.ico
C:\WINDOWS\NDNuninstall5_48.exe
C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\YPSR\Quarantine\ppq365.tmp\XupiterStartup2003.exe
C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch

Go to Start > Run and type regedit and click 'OK'. Naviage to the following key and delete the item in red

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{A9571378-68A1-443D-B082-284F960C6D17}

Reboot your computer. Double check the items you used KillBox on, no longer exist, and then report back with how your computer is behaving acompnied by a fresh HJT log.

Well I don't see any signs of the desktpo hijacks I'm used to. Lets try this.

Right click and SaveAs - http://www.greyknigh...pairDesktop.reg and download it to your desktop. Double click it once it's downloaded to run it. Click YES when it asks you to merge to the registry.

Please run an online virus scan at Panda ActiveScan. Save the results and bring them with you in your next post.

Before you begin, take a read through the instructions and download the programs that I've advised. Save the below instructions in notepad or wordpad, because you also have to work in safe mode without networking support, so this page wouldn't be available then. You should not have any browsers on.

Please allow yourself a few spare hours. Below are instructions for a virus scan that can take longer then 2 hours. If you want, you may leave Ewido running while you go about your business. It's not essential that you sit and monitor it's progress.

If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below.

It is also important you don't miss a step and perform everything in the right order!!. .

Please download these additional files/programs. Do not run them unless instructed to do so.
Unless otherwise stated, they should be stored in same directory as the HiJackThis program.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Download & Install CleanUp!

Download Ewido Security Suite - Install & Update it's database but do not run it yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, download and update Ad-Aware SE Setup. Don't run it yet!

Unplug your computer from the Internet when you have finished downloading

Found and deleted Windows\Systems32\ptainfo2.ico
Didn't find Documents and settings\randy\Start Menu\Programs\ Hardware Seek.Ink
Ran all scans in safe mode with dailup unpluged. The only problem I had was couldn't open Panda active scan from desktop. Had to go to site and run it. No infected objects found by ad-aware or ewido scan. PC runs the same except now my wallpaper has vanished. Just a black screen with icons.

Found and deleted Shudder Global Limited. Searched hours for Hardware Seek. Ink. Couldn't find it. Ran the desktop fix. It just said it had sucessfully entered into registry. PC still runs the same.

REBOOT TO SAFE MODE
  • Restart the computer. The computer begins processing a set of instructions known as BIOS.
  • As soon as the BIOS has finished loading, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
  • Continue to do so until the 'Windows Advanced Options' menu appears.
  • Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, scroll to and select the menu item - Safe Mode.
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Locate & double-click on WinPFind.exe.
  • Click Start Scan
  • Once the Scan is Complete
  • Go to the WinPFind folder & locate WinPFind.txt
  • Post the results in your next post!
* This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works as it can take a while, upwards to 30 minutes or more.

REBOOT TO NORMAL MODE

Locate & double-click on Tq.vbs. Wait a few seconds and a notepad page will pop up, Copy & Paste those results in your next post
* If your Antivirus has Script Blocking, you will get a Pop Up Windows asking you what to do. Allow this Entire Script to Run, its harmless!

In your next post please provide the results from:

Have you changed your desktop appearance yet?

There's nothing more ot go one. Every scan you've run now returns clean.

I'm sure it's the desktop settings - just now need to be changed to your preference.

I'll try the desktop setting, but still get the Norton alert and the PC still runs the same. Takes me forever to connect to the net plus after a short period of time it takes control of the keyboard and won't let me type. The desktop also keeps refreshing during startup. Once it takes control can't pull up start menu to turn off PC, I have to turn off at server. then when I reboot sometimes the desktop icons will only show me the properties and not open the program. Don't know what else to do. PC has been running like this for about 6 weeks. :tazz:
