after attempting to clean various search engine spyware (alexa, newdot) using adware/spybot my IE stopped working, comes up with a "application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005)." Machine seems extremely slow (like its waiting for something to fail/timeout before opening an application like wordpad). I've gone through all your pre-post steps (ewido seemed to find lots of stuff that adware/spybot didn't). Also tried to remove/re-install iexplorer but no go. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Since the orginal post I did a manual remove of NewDot using LSPfix, still broken (but did get rid of the "rundll" message at boot!). I've tried to "repair" IE6 through the add/remove programs applet - no go, If I "remove" IE6 and revert back to IE5 it seems to work but as soon as reinstall IE6sp1 I get back to the same "failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005)" error message. maybe that "no name" helper object?

There's not much in your log that would indicate a problem.

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Let's try this for IE:

Note: Both methods listed require that the Microsoft Windows XP CD-ROM be available.

Method 1: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x Repair for Windows XP

• From the Start menu, select Run.
• In the Open field, type sfc /scannow (Note: There is a space between sfc and /scannow)
• Select the OK button.
• Follow the prompts throughout the System File Checker process.
• Reboot the computer when System File Checker completes.

Try Internet Explorer to see if this worked.

Method 2: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x Repair for Windows XP

• From the Start menu, select Search, select All Files and Folders.
• Select More Advanced Options and place a checkmark beside Search Hidden Files and Folders option.
• Ensure that Search System Folders and Search Subfolders are also checked.
• In the All or Part of the File Name box, type ie.inf
• In the Look In drop-down menu, select C: or the letter of the hard drive that contains the Windows folder.
• Click the Search button.
• In the search results pane, find the ie.inf file located in Windows\Inf folder.
• Right click the ie.inf file and click Install on the context menu.
• Reboot the computer when the file copy process is complete.

Back to work....

I cleaned (via hijackthis) the items you suggested. I also tried to repair IE via Method 1 you suggest ed (I'm assuming that it was a typo when you Referenced the XP cd rom... as I'm on win 2k).

I also tried method two but my CD rom didn't have a SP4 directory that my system is currently at.....and I didn't know where to point the dialog box to?

Any other ideas? like I said works fine with IE5.... just can't install IE 6 (or maybe I can't unistall it cleanly)

Been there.... Done that..... :-(

Thats how I know it works with IE5 (i.e., by uninstalling IE6sp1) but when I reinstall IE6 I get the same "failed to initialize" error. (Currently I'm having the user "just use IE5"). I'm trying to avoid a complete "do over" on the OS.... But maybe its time?
