I have aproposmedia spyware on my computer. I have run the following programs:

Cleanup, ad-aware se, cwshredder, spybot s&d, ewido security suite, microsoft anti spyware, avg, windows update. These programs have found the spyware and say they have deleted it but when i check the regedit file - the following is still there:

hkey_local_machines\software\aprps
hkey_local_machines\software\aprps\clientpartnerid

It seems like this spyware continues to reinstall itself>

Here is the result of my Ewido Security Suite scan

I would greatly appreciate your help in getting rid of this program. I also tried the norton utilities tool fixaprop but when I run this it say aproposmedia not found on system. The only reason I knew there was a problem is that sometimes after leaving the computer on, I am unable to log back on to any user- the existing passwords are not valid. If I restart the computer I can get back on.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,

Deborah

Hello,
  • You are running HijackThis from the Desktop; please create a new folder for it and move the program into the new folder
  • Download CWShredder From Here, and save it on the Desktop. Please do not run it yet, though.
  • Run CWShredder to fix your CWS problem.
  • Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.
  • Disable TeaTimer:
Go into Spybot > Mode > Advanced Mode > Tools > Resident.
    Uncheck the following:
Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of over-all system settings) Active.

  • Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = file://C:\WINDOWS\System32\SearchBar.htm
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Yww5Rja2Q] tss2dvag.exe

Close all browsers and windows, Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
  • Reboot into Safe Mode: please Read This if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files in red, and delete them:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\SearchBar.htm
    tss2dvag.exe

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.
Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.

Hello,

I have gone thorugh and done the following :

Moved Hijackt this -to a folder
run cwshredder
Set system to show all files
Disable Teatimer in Spybot

Closed all Programs and ran Hijack this.

My current Hijack this log does not have the
RI - HKCu\Softwre\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = file://C:\Windows\System32\Searchbar.htm

For R1 - It has the following

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/[COLOR=red]

It still has the other two lines

R# - Default URLSearchHook is missing
04 - HKCU\..\|Run:[Yww5Rja2Q}tss2dvag.exe

I am not sure how to proceed. Please let me know what I should delete from the Hijack this log.

MY current Hijack This Log is:

Hello,

  • The following explains how to remove items from your computer that are malware. Turn off Microsoft Anti-Spyware as it might interfere with the process.

  • Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Yww5Rja2Q] tss2dvag.exe

Close all browsers and windows, Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
  • Reboot into Safe Mode: please Read This if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:
    tss2dvag.exe

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

If you were unable to find any of the files then please follow these additional instructions:
Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.
Run it, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete(see below in bold), paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\tss2dvag.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\tss2dvag.exe

The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.
    Let the system reboot.
Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.

Hello, those logs look clean. Is Microsoft Anti-Spyware still flagging those reg keys?

Hello,

I'm glad to hear that these logs look clean. Unfortunately, Microsoft antispyware continues to find the following:

Spyware Scan Details
Start Date: 10/2/2005 12:14:08 PM
End Date: 10/2/2005 12:18:41 PM
Total Time: 4 mins 33 secs

Detected Threats

AproposMedia Browser Modifier more information...
Details: AproposMedia is a browser modifier that installs with PeopleOnPage (POP). AproposMedia displays pop-up advertisements and changes browser settings.
Status: Removed
Severe threat - Severe-risk items have an extreme potential for harm, such as a security exploit, and should be removed.

Infected registry keys/values detected
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Aprps
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Aprps\Client PartnerId WB.VER2

Everytime I hit remove, the spywarescan still finds the same threat. Right after running the spyware scan, I check the regedit file and these entries are still there.

Any other suggestions? Overall, the computer is running better but I would like to get rid of everything.

Thanks again,

Deborah

Create a Startup List
  • Reboot to safe mode
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the "Config..." button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Check off the 2 boxes next to the Box that says "Generate StartupList log"
  • Click on the button "Generate StartupList log"
  • Copy and past the StartupList from the notepad into your next post

Right click on this RegSearch.VBS and choose Save As. Leave the filename alone and save it somewhere.

Reboot to safe mode.

Now run that program and do a search using this word...... NpfPIPE

Then hit OK.

It will tell you when it is done, and offer you to look at the file. Say yes and when it opens post it here please.
