Well, I have just found something else in your log which to be honest I didn't pay much attention to until I questioned your possible age based upon what Ewido removed.

This entry: O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [] winlog.exe looks to be part of a process belonging to the Salfeld Personal Security tool which is used to set parental controls to your computer. I assume you are too old for that, so it must be this instead, a process which is registered as the W32.Agobot.LF virus.

Let's try one more time ensuring everything is done correctly. Both antispyware programmes appear to be disabled according to the log, but please check them anyway.

Ensure that you are the only user profile with administrator rights and logged on as such.

Please set your system to show all files;
please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Press the Control-Alt-Del keys together in order to enter the Task Manager.

Click on the Processes tab and end the following processes:

services32.exe
services.exe

Exit the Task Manager when finished.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

O2 - BHO: BAHelper Class - {A3FDD654-A057-4971-9844-4ED8E67DBBB8} - C:\Program Files\SideFind\sfbho.dll
O2 - BHO: Internet Explorer Web Content Catcher - {FFF4E223-7019-4ce7-BE03-D7D3C8CCE884} - C:\Program Files\DNS\Catcher.dll
O3 - Toolbar: YourSiteBar - {86227D9C-0EFE-4f8a-AA55-30386A3F5686} - C:\Program Files\YourSiteBar\ysb.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [] winlog.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [rutdbmd] C:\WINDOWS\system32\jtwgslqu\rutdbmd.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [] winlog.exe
O9 - Extra button: SideFind - {10E42047-DEB9-4535-A118-B3F6EC39B807} - C:\Program Files\SideFind\sidefind.dll

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders (in bold), and delete them:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Windows\services32.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\services.exe
C:\Program Files\SideFind\
C:\Program Files\DNS\
C:\Program Files\YourSiteBar\
C:\WINDOWS\system32\jtwgslqu\
C:\Program Files\SideFind\
winlog.exe - use search to find this file

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Please post a fresh HJT log.

I've tried terminating the services.exe through Task Manager before, and it displays a pop up window telling me that Windows will be shut down, and I have no way of stopping it from doing so. It then restarts my PC and its back again.. haha sorry this is such a pain.

What happened?

Bit of a difference!

One adjustment to make:

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

O9 - Extra button: SideFind - {10E42047-DEB9-4535-A118-B3F6EC39B807} - C:\Program Files\SideFind\sidefind.dll (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

A fresh HJT log please.

I really need to know what you did to fix all of the items that you couldn't do before. You were having problems deleting and then suddenly, everything went; you had to do something differently and I need to know in case I stumble across this problem again.

Anyway, now I have to say.....................................

Congratulations! your new log is clean. :tazz: Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated. :)

Happy safe surfing. BTW I reckon you are fairly close to me geographically.

I have no idea.. but I believe it was probably to do with that file you noticed, winlog.exe. That was probably the sod doing all the work! Thanks so much for your help! :) I'm from Ipswich.. so geographically close in relation to the rest of the world :)

Sorry got some bad news, computer was absolutely fine yesterday, running fantastically, then this morning pretty much all of it was back. It seems that DNS (catcher.dll) is the most persistant. I've deleted the files I deleted last time in Safe Mode, and again is running fairly normally (there was one that popped up again, a BHO) I did a fresh HiJack This Log after deleting the files, can you let me know if you see any problems? Thanks.

Hello again

The part of your log dealing with hosts and BHO's looks OK now, but for future reference, it is good to know this.

Sometimes MSAS restores bad start pages, if that is the case here, we will have to use MS Anti-Spyware to get rid of it, because that's what keeps putting that entry back
  • Open Microsoft Antispyware.
  • In the right upper corner go to Advanced tools
  • Please click on "Change restore setting to a new URL".
  • Change it to something you would like to use as your homepage.
  • If prompted for the change, allow it.
  • When the left hand side is showing a 'good' restore, press "Restore This Setting Now".
  • We need to get a non-infected page there.
The rest of your log looks very much like it did before, infected. Try the fix first, ensuring you are logged on as the only user with administrator's rights, and that both MSAS and SpySubtract are disabled:

Please set your system to show all files;
please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

O3 - Toolbar: YourSiteBar - {86227D9C-0EFE-4f8a-AA55-30386A3F5686} - C:\Program Files\YourSiteBar\ysb.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [] winlog.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [] winlog.exe
O18 - Protocol: msnim - {828030A1-22C1-4009-854F-8E305202313F} - "C:\PROGRA~1\MSNMES~1\msgrapp.dll" (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files, and delete them:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Windows\services32.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\services.exe
winlog.exe

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Install Ewido Security Suite.
  • Install Ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
    • You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates
Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

Safe Mode

Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The programme will now open to the main screen.

Now that the updates have been installed do the following:
    • Click on scanner
    • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • NOTE: During some scans with Ewido it is finding cases of false positives.[list]
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop and include it in your reply.
Now close Ewido security suite.

Also include a fresh HJT log

Wow! Ewido really likes your PC!

I want you to do an online scan. You can use Firefox for this one:

Go to Trend Micro Housecall

Please post the log afterwards along with a fresh HJT log.
