I am pretty computer illiterate, but i have ran ad-aware, spy-bot, and AVG. They are all updated and current. I keep getting the winfixer pop up and can't get rid of it. I normally use Avast home edition, but thought i would disable it and try to run AVG since it was reccommended by this site. I can't do anything w/o getting the warnings stating that a virus was found. I try to delete, but get the same thing a few min. later. I looked at some forums posted by other and dl'd hiJack This. Please help!!! I need my computer back. If you can reply in simple english or terms for the computer illiterate i might have a chance!!
Thank you in advance for all your help!! This is what my log read.

Hi anissaimaqt and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

1. If you haven't logged in go to Geeks to Go and do so. Then proceed to item a.

If you already have logged in, go directly to item a.
  • Click on My Controls at the top right hand corner of the window.
  • In the left hand column, click "View Topics"
  • If you click on the title of your post, you will be taken there
2. Also, while at the My Controls page, check the box to the right of your post and then scroll down.
.Where it says "unsubscribe" click the pull-down menu and select "immediate email notification"

3. You are currently running 2 antivirus software programs on your system. This often causes system conflicts and can lead to making it easier to get infected. Please remove one of them. Your choice.

4. Please DELETE your current HJT program from its present location.

5. Download and run the following HijackThis autoinstall program from Here . Please choose the default location of C:\Program Files\ as the destination. HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click SCAN and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')
  • POST the log into this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Regards,

Trevuren

There was no need for you to find anything according to the fix that I provided. Improvisation is seldom a wise course of action in this malware removal game.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
  • First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:
    • Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
    • Choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
    • Uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
    • Close the window with ok
  • Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp...rch/search.html
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWFX5RS_0001_0808] "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\IYDF0HXJ\WFXScanR[1].exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWFX5] "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\B3ABRG8F\WinFixer2005ScannerInstall[1].exe"
    O4 - Global Startup: Updates from HP.lnk = C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: utildb - C:\WINDOWS\Help\Tours\utildb.dll (file missing)

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
    • Press Enter.
  • Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if they are present):

    C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\137903<==Folder
ALCXMNTR.EXE<==You will have to Search for this one
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\IYDF0HXJ<==Folder
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\B3ABRG8F<==Folder

  • Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now.

1. Please UNINSTALL your current version of HJT

2. REBOOT your machine

3. Download and INSTALL a fresh version from the source appearing previously in this thread.

4. Apply previous fix as described

Trevuren,
After uninstalling, rebooting, reinstalling, and running, and clicking on fix problems I got the same error: Unexpected error #52 ( Bad file name or number) in Sub GetLong Path)exe".exe). It was for these 2 files:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWFX5RS_0001_0808] "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\IYDF0HXJ\WFXScanR[1].exe"

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWFX5] "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\B3ABRG8F\WinFixer2005ScannerInstall[1].exe"

Let me know what to do next as i will continue to try.

Please download the Killbox.
Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Copy the text to a Notepad file and save it to your desktop! We will need the file later.

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\IYDF0HXJ\WFXScanR[1].exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\B3ABRG8F\WinFixer2005ScannerInstall[1].exe

Then please reboot into Safe Mode by restarting your computer and pressing F8 as your computer is booting up. Then select the Safe Mode option.

Once in Safe Mode, please run Killbox.

Select "Delete on Reboot".

Open the text file with these instructions in it, and copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\IYDF0HXJ\WFXScanR[1].exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\B3ABRG8F\WinFixer2005ScannerInstall[1].exe

Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

Then please run HJT, SCan and post a fresh HJT log for review.

Regards,

Trevuren

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWFX5RS_0001_0808] "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\IYDF0HXJ\WFXScanR[1].exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWFX5] "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\B3ABRG8F\WinFixer2005ScannerInstall[1].exe"

    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\IYDF0HXJ\WFXScanR[1].exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\B3ABRG8F\WinFixer2005ScannerInstall[1].exe

  • Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now.
Regards,

Trevuren
