Could someone please help me?

I've lost the icons and drives for the removable storage devices. The ones on the front on my Medion PC for putting the Memory Stick, Smart Card etc.
They used to show up under the 'Devices for Removable Storage' group, along with the 'F' & 'G' drives ie DVD/CD drives.
This is a view of 'My Computer' view.

Welcome to G2G

It looks like the system is no longer detecting these devices.
Is the card reader a several-in-one device (i.e. takes several different cards, each with own drive letter but built into a single physical unit)?
I assume that the memory stick is a seperate USB device, right?

Could you also tell me what motherboard you have (make/model) please?

Hello Samm, thank you for the welcome.

As far as I know all four missing 'card readers' are all 'in one' so to speak.
There are four slots on the front of my Medion PC and there used to be four icons labled 'H' 'I' 'J' & 'K' next to the DVD drives.

Looking at the motherboard in System Properties I see AC1\PN0C02|1 under details.
Sorry if I'm not giving enough information. I'm not too good with hardware details.

The card reader is built into the case then instead of being removable?

If you go into device manager (or type devmgmt.msc in the Run command) can you see an entry for the card reader? You may have tp expand a few of the categories in order to see what devices are listed?

The card reader is built into the case, it's not a stand alone one.
I have looked in the Device Manager and checked every category but there's no sign of the card reader.
Could it be a case of the card reader has actually 'had it' so to speak?

OK, I want you to try this for me please :

Shut down the PC

On the rear of the PCs power supply is a little black power switch - turn this switch off but leave the system connected to the mains.

Press & hold the power switch on the front of the case for about 45 seconds.

Release the power switch, turn the rear power switch back on & start the computer up.

Let me know if your card reader has reappeared.

Hi Samm

:tazz: RESULT! The icons and drives are back and working.Image_copy.jpg
Thank you so much.

I must say, when I read your instructions, I was very sceptical. "How on earth can pressing a switch when the PC is off achieve anything" I thought.
Oh me of little faith.

I'm so pleased I've discovered this forum.

Hi
I'm glad its all working now. Basically the procedure I asked you to perform discharges the static build up in the system. This was the reason that the card reader had vanished.

Thank you for that explanation Samm. I understand a bit more now.

I'll know what to do if ever it happens again.

I'll have to check and see if the firewire and usb ports on the front of this PC are working again now. They wouldn't recognise anything that was connected to them. I bought new ones to put in the back.

If I'd known about Geeks to Go then, I'd have checked here first.

Thank you again.

OK, good luck with it. If you have any further problems or queries, don't hesitate to ask :tazz:
