Yes, I agree. It is very frustrating when you se all these "recipes" shoved at you from everywhere and you don't understand what in the hang is happening. Well, I will try and explain just a little. It is extremely rare to find just one infection on a machine. It is as if they travel in packs. Just because we kill the one that is currently manifesting itself, doesn't signify that they are all gone. One down and a few more to go.

Often our fixes or recipes leave traces behing that, to the untrained eye, appear to be full-blown infections when in fact they are just orphaned registry entries. The helper will usually go on to the other infection and leave all the orphans for one massive cleanup at the end. We still have a CoolWebSearch infection to deal with and a general cleanup. I will probably ask you to do a lengthy scan of your system to ensure that everything is clear before telling you that all is fine.

EXCELLENT WORK Now to get rid of the orphaned registry entries.

I need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes.

• Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
• Click on Options, Settings.
• In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
• Under Startup Options uncheck: Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
• Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck: Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
• After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
• Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware

• Please RUN HijackThis.
  . Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
  
  
• Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:
  
  O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {52B1DFC7-AAFC-4362-B103-868B0683C697} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmkhf.dll (file missing)

Am I correct in my assesment that there is a linkage between WinFin and VirtuMonde?
While the VirtuMonde may not be present on my PC at this moment my goal is to block it from returning.

Will whatever I'm doing here do that as well as block future WinFix pop ups also?

I'm assuming that once VirtuMonde is in the PC it draws the Pop ups out of cyber space. Is that close?

1. Run HijackThis, click SCAN and a screen appears. You have done this before.

2. A list of entries appears (you saw this before) with little boxes beside them.

3. Right click in the little box next to the entry that I indicated in my previous post.

4. Now look at the bottom of the HJT window and you will see the button "Fix checked".... Click on it.

5. Now CLOSE HijackThis (You know how to close programs"

6. REBOOT your computer (You knoe how to do this).

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Reconfigure Windows XP to hide hidden files:

• Click Start. Open My Computer.
• Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
  
• Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
• Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
• Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

2. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE

• Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
• Left click on "System Restore Tab"
• Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
• Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE

• Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
• Click on "Apply"

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

To protect yourself further:

• Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
