You guys are great!

My problems are some foreign Google website about George Bush idiot, ads.clickagents.com popups, and I think lots of other popups that Yahoo Toolbar is blocking, becuase it's very slow. Should I disable that so I really know what's going on?

I posted a few days ago, I'm helping my mother-in-law with her PC. The direction I was given was to install Windows Update. Well, I (accidentally) installed Service Pack 2, even though I was specifically instructed to install SP1a. I'm so sorry. Not sure what to do now.

Since then, I have read the complete list, ran Ad-aware, with all the right things checked, downloaded and ran Spybot, the Scotty Dog, and Spy Bloaster is also running on my machine. Also, I have downloaded Symantec and have the latest virus definitions going on. I took it upon myslef (gosh I hope I don't regret this) to disable a few things from Startup that i thought looked very suspect from Scotty's log.
The good news is I may have gotten rid of Free6 popup, which is wonderful. Not sure what I did but it hasn't come up lately.

Here is my logfile. I will be so excited to hear what I should do, and how I repair my dumb mistake with the Windows Update. (Honestly, I don't think it realy gave me a choice, I think i just accepted the defaults and let BillG/Windows do "its thing" to my machine! :tazz:

I want to get really good at this and help other people, but for now I have...

Hello and welcome to GeeksToGo Forums. We hope you enjoy your stay here! :tazz:

We apologize for the delay in response. The forums have been very busy lately.

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.

Place a checkmark next to these entries, close all browsers and windows, and have HijackThis fix them by clicking Fix Checked:

Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
Click Start. Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.
To return to normal mode just restart your computer as you normally would.

Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\mswin.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\winupdate2date.exe

Now you can restart the computer normally.

Copy and paste this code box text into a text editor such as Notepad.

Save this text as fixworm.reg. Make sure the "Save as type:" is "All Files (*.*)" and save it to your desktop.

Double-click on fixworm.reg. When it asks you to merge the information to the registry click Yes.

Please run HijackThis again and post a fresh log, just so I can make sure that all the malware was deleted according to plan. ;)
