I appear to have a problem similar to SHU 1963 in that my CD and DVD drivers have 'gone' from the list in my device manager. The driver is a QSI DVD ROM SDR 083.
I cannot open my DVD or read any discs now as the ROM doesn't open up.
Cannot get any response from Acer after e-mailing and telephoning for over a week.

Try the popular CDGONE patch. CD drives may vanish in Windows Explorer, Device Manager, etc. if a third-party CD-burning package has been uninstalled and Registry references for some code modules aren’t removed successfully. This patch and a reboot usually will restore the missing drives. Any third party package still required will then have to be re-installed.
