i think i got an arab virus... i got a IM and my bf clicked the link. in ie it kept going to a arab thing in the address bar. and then pop ups kept coming. i tried all the stuff listed on here. i cleaned up my temp folders. i did search and destroy and that found a lot of spyware. and i got the AVG thing which found 5 trojans.... so i thought it was fixed. the arab thing doesnt pop up anymore, but my computer takes forever to start up. im afraid its still on here.

Welcome, pinknpeppers. Sorry for the delay.

After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please print out the instructions here (or save it in Notepad) so that you can follow along more easily.

1. Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:

O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.net - {F4430FE8-2638-42e5-B849-800749B94EED} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker.net\partypokernet.exe
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.net - {F4430FE8-2638-42e5-B849-800749B94EED} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker.net\partypokernet.exe
O16 - DPF: {FC67BB52-AAB6-4282-9D51-2DAFFE73AFD0} - http://download.spys...rcabinstall.cab

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

2. Please download LQfix.exe from one of the following locations:
  • http://www.downloads.subratam.org/LQfix.exe
    http://miekiemoes.geekstogo.com/tools/LQfix.exe

  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double-Click LQfix.exe and click Next > Next > Install.
  • Leave the default settings, if you change them, the fix will Fail!
  • You need an active Internet Connection, so make sure your you're not blocking any connection now.
  • Now make sure the "Launch LQfix" box is checked.
  • Click the Finish button, after clicking the Finish button the fix will start.
  • Follow the on-screen prompts.
  • Your system will reboot afterwards.
  • Please be patient after the reboot, there is a script running in the background that needs to complete.

3. Please do an online virus scan with Panda ActiveScan Here. You need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Once you get to the Panda site, scroll down a bit and click on Scan your PC
  • A new window will appear; click on Check Now!
  • A new window will appear; fill in the boxes (Country, State, email addy)
  • Click on Scan Now! >
    If you have never used ActiveScan before, you will be prompted to install an ActiveX control (asinst.cab) : click on Install. Panda will install the component, and then install the latest signature files.
  • From "Select a device to scan...", choose "My Computer"
  • Allow the scan to run. It'll take a while.
  • When complete, click on "See Report", and then on "Save report"; save it to a convenient location.
  • I will need you to post that report in your next reply; simply open the text file, then copy/paste the content here.
Restart your computer.

Please reply to this post with a new HiJackThis log and the scan log from the Panda Active Scan.

Thanks,

JC :tazz:

Pinknpeppers: You are using LimeWire, please see the following link for more information on Clean and Infected File Sharing Programs. There are inherent risks with using filesharing applications. Filesharing applications are a risk to your computers security. I would recommend that remove LimeWire through your the "Add/Remove programs" icon located in your Control Panel.

After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please print out the instructions here (or save it in Notepad) so that you can follow along more easily.

1. Download CleanUp

Install the program. DO NOT RUN IT YET.

2. If you already haven't done so - please download/install/configure/update with Spybot Search & Destroy and AdAware.

Follow all the instructions in the following tutorials(Hold off on doing the full scans. We will do these in safe mode.):

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer
Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

3. Let's turn on the viewing of hidden files:
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

4. Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
If you are having problems, additional instructions on how to do this can be found here: How to start Windows in Safe mode.

5. Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them if still present:

C:\WINNT\NDNuninstall6_38.exe <==file
C:\WINNT\unstall.exe <==file
C:\WINNT\DOWNLOADED PROGRAM FILES\v3.dll <==file
C:\WINNT\system32\lockx.exe <==file
C:\xz.bat <==file

Let me know if you had any problems deleting any of the files above.

6. Now run the CleanUp program:

*IMPORTANT NOTE*
CleanUp deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups.
If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp.

Running CleanUp
  • Start CleanUp by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
  • When CleanUp starts go to the Options button (right side of CleanUp screen)
  • Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
  • Now place a checkmark next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Delete Cookies
    This is optional, if you leave the box checked it will remove all of your cookies, at this point removing cookies is a good idea
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
  • Click OK
  • Then click on the CleanUp button. This will take a short while, let it do its thing.
  • When asked to reboot system select No
  • Close CleanUp

7. Perform a full system scan with Ad-aware and Spybot.

Restart your computer back to normal mode.

Pinknpeppers, log looks clean...great job! :tazz:

Let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
* CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detection and Removal Programs:

You already have 2 good Anti-spyware detection programs -SpyBot, and Ad-Aware. It is important that all of these programs are updated, and you run full system scans on a regular basis.

Please see the following tutorials below:

How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware
Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

Prevention Programs:

I recommend the following two programs that will help prevent an infection:

Spywareblaster - SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
Spywareguard - SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Both programs will compliment one another.

Other necessary Programs and steps:

Anti-virus program - It looks like you have an anti-virus program. It is important that this program is updated, and you run a full system scan on a regular basis.

More Secure Browser - Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - If you are a Windows users you must visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This site is a Microsoft site that will scan your computer for any patches or updates that are missing from your computer. It will then provide a list of items that it can download and install for you. This will ensure your computer has all of the latest security updates available installed on your computer and is secure from any known security holes.

Please read the following:
So how did I get infected in the first place? and Spyware Aid's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.

Reply once more that you understand these procedures, and confirm that there are no remaining issues.
