Hello,

One of the better free ways to go from AVI to watchable DVD is DIKO used with DVD Styler. DIKO converts your AVI files to DVD compliant mpeg files and DVD Styler is used to create the DVD and menus. This will output an ISO DVD image that can be burned with almost any DVD burning program. Below are the links to the program and a great step-by-step guide to this process.
DIKO: http://www.vmesquita.com/en/diko.htm

DVD Styler: http://dvdstyler.sourceforge.net/

Cheers,
Tom
