Hello

I just got a pc from a friend that can't run explorer.exe even in safe mode all it does after login is show the wallpaper.

if i ctrl+alt+del and try new task i can run anything but explorer.exe.

if i rename/ copy explorer.exe to anything else and run it works as if i had double clicked "my documents".

This PC has Win XP SP2.

Witch setting is preventing Explorer.exe from running??

Thanks

Hi pmoita! Welcome to G2G!

If you have the windows XP disc handy, I suggest you try a Repair Installation of windows. Don't worry all your programs will still work and none of your files and settings will be deleted. This will just restore the operating system files to their original state. You will need to do all Windows Updates again after doing this.

Post back how things are going.

Thanks both, i don't have the cd, but i think i can get it on monday. i´ll try that then.

The shell settings have the default values. No change there.

After some more changes it started to show a message saying: windows can't find explorer.exe as if i typed "xpto.exe" in the run box.

And shows the same message if i try to double click "explorer.exe" in the windows folder after running it with a different name, or using the full path "c:\windows\explorer.exe".

I Just got the CD but it only shows the fresh installation option. It does not allow to repair.

With an CD WinXP + SP2 allows to do a repair install, after it finished it does the same. Explorer.exe does not run, only shows the message saying windows can't find 'c:\windows\explorer.exe'.

After some more changes i copied explorer.exe to exp.exe and changed the shell setting to use this file (Thanks yardguard).

Seems to be working fine, my friend will use it this way.

I just would like to know why explorer.exe does not run. Even if i rename or copy notepad.exe to explorer.exe does not run.
Where does it say that the "explorer.exe" can't be executed.

Can anyone solve this? For the moment it's working, so it's only my curiosity forcing me to find this out.
