I've been chasing this malware around and around my computer for days now. I've followed the instructions on your new posts page, running Ad-aware, Spybot S&D, CWShredder, Ewido, Trojan Hunter, Windows Update, MS Anti-Spyware, even Cleanup!, Hijack This, Killbox and finally Vundofix which (I think) finally has eliminated a threat which has been alternately identified by these different programs as vx2.look2me, virtumundo, trojan.crypt.o, depending on which program I was scanning with at the time. The file in question seemed to be c:\windows\system32\jkhfc.dll, which none of these programs was able to delete, they would simply identify it existed but were unable to delete as it apparently would self-replicate or block attempts to delete the file, (even Killbox reported "pending file rename operations registry data has been removed by external process.") until Vundofix which has finally, miraculously, deleted the file in question "jkhfc.dll"
However, the problem I am now having is the system is still running slow, booting slowly, and every time I reboot, I get a Windows error message saying CWShredder has encountered an error and needs to close do I want to send a report to Microsoft..... I have been unable to uninstall CWShredder or stop this error from popping up every time I reboot (even booting in safemode results in the error). I don't know if this is just a conflict with my system and CWShredder, or if it is related to the continual problems I've had trying to eradicate the above mentioned file or perhaps some other vile lurking malware affecting my system. The latest Hijack This log file is attached, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
CDK

Hi cdk and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

1. Go to Geeks to Go
. Click on My Controls at the top right hand corner of the window. (make sure you have signed in first)
. In the left hand column, click "View Topics"
. If you click on the title of your post, you will be taken there

2. Also, while at the My Controls page, check the box to the right of your post and then scroll down.
.Where it says "unsubscribe" click the pull-down menu and select "immediate email notification"

3. Try the following:

We want to stop, disable and delete an added service (023)

A. To stop a service and set to 'disabled'
  • Go to Start > Run and type in Services.msc then click OK
  • Click the Extended tab.
  • Scroll down until you find the service.
    ===>CWShredder Service
  • Click once on the service to highlight it.
  • Click Stop
  • Right-Click on the service.
  • Click on 'Properties'
  • Select the 'General' tab
  • Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side on the 'Start-up Type' box
  • From the drop-down menu, click on 'Disabled'
  • Click the 'Apply' tab, then click 'OK'
The service is now stopped and disabled.

B. We will now delete the service:

1. Open HJT

2. Click on Config>>Misc Tools>>Delete an NT Service

3. Copy/Paste CWShredder Service in the space provided and click OK

4. The program will ask you to REBOOT --- Accept

5. REBOOT into SAFE MODE

6. Using Windows Explorer, locate and DELETE the following file (if it still is present):

c:\program files\InterMute<==Folder and all its coontent

7. REBOOT back into Normal Mode

8. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Regards,

Trevuren

Latest Hijack This log attached after following directions for CWShredder. No error on reboot this time so I think CWShredder has been successfully removed. This was apparently a conflict somewhere? rather than additional malware hidden in the system? I haven't had any winfixer or other random popups since the original problem with the jkhfc.dll file. Now to keep my kid from accidently getting into more trouble....
Thanks again for all your help.

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Reconfigure Windows XP to hide hidden files:
  • Click Start. Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
  • Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
  • Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
2. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
  • Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
  • Left click on "System Restore Tab"
  • Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
  • Left click on "Apply"
TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
  • Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
  • Click on "Apply"
Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)

Regards,

Trevuren

Thanks, I've downloaded and installed the suggested programs, and the "how did I get infected..." suggestions. Since I can't take the computer away from the kid, I might as well save myself time having to sit and fix it in the future.
Thanks again for all your help.
