I somehow have picked up this winfixer virus, because one day I had a screen pop up when I was using Internet Explorer. I have scanned my computer with AdAware and symantec antivirus, and it doesn't seem to be helping, because my Internet Explorer is still acting very slow and weird.

Here is the HiJackThis log. Please help me! I would greatly appreciate it!! Thank you!!!

Welcome to GTG.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Please download VundoFix.exe at http://www.atribune....ds/VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

* Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files.
* After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key (or F5 in some machines) until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
* Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
* Please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddcyx.dll

* Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
* When asked for a second path, enter -> C:\WINDOWS\system32\xycdd.*
* Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
* The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
* In HijackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

O1 - Hosts: 64.12.152.18 search.netscape.com
O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {52B1DFC7-AAFC-4362-B103-868B0683C697} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddcyx.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWFX5] "C:\Documents and Settings\Admin\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\4PEZW967\WinFixer2005ScannerInstall[1].exe"
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ddcyx - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddcyx.dll

Download KillBox http://www.greyknigh...spy/KillBox.exe. Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. Copy the below files and go back to KillBox. Go to File->Paste from Clipboard and then hit the button with a red circle and white X. Confirm to delete and when asked if you want to reboot, say No:

C:\Documents and Settings\Admin\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\4PEZW967\WinFixer2005ScannerInstall[1].exe

* After you have fixed these items in HijackThis, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
* Pressing any key will cause a 'Blue Screen of Death' this is normal, do not worry!
* Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Download and install CleanUp! http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click 'Options...'
Move the arrow down to 'Custom CleanUp!'
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

* Empty Recycle Bins
* Delete Cookies
* Delete Prefetch files
* Cleanup! All Users

Click OK. Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run an online virus scan at ActiveScan http://www.pandasoft.../activescan.htm

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HijackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Let's try using Ewido and see if it detects anything else:

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/.

1. Install Ewido Security Suite.
2. When installing, under 'Additional Options' uncheck:
* Install background guard
* Install scan via context menu
3. Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double click it.
4. The program will now open to the main screen.
5. When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning 'Database could not be found!'. Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
6. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
* On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
* Then click on Start Update.
7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. The status bar at the bottom will display 'Update successful'.
8. Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can go to http://www.ewido.net...wnload/updates/ to update manually.

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Don't run it yet.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck 'Scan local drives for temporary files'. Also uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose Yes to logoff.

Now open Ewido and do a scan on your system.

* Click on scanner
* Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* NOTE: During some scans with Ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
o You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
o If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
o Do NOT select 'Perform action on all infections'
o If you are unsure of any entry found, select none for now as the action.
* Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
* Click Save report.
* Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWFX5] "C:\Documents and Settings\Admin\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\4PEZW967\WinFixer2005ScannerInstall[1].exe"

Restart your computer. Post the logs for HijackThis and Ewido.

Hello greyknight!! :)

So I tried the second recommendation.

I had the same error message pop up when I went to delete:
04 HKLM...
in HiJackThis.
When I click on this box, and then click "fix checked" , a box pops up asking "Fix 1 selected items? This will permanently delete and/or repair what you selected, unless you make a back up". And asks "yes" or "no".
I clicked yes, and then received another box saying:
"Unexpected error occurred! Error #52 (Bad file name or number) in Sub GetLongPath(exe".exe). Please send a report to [email protected], mentioning what you were doing, and what version of Windows you have.
This message has been copied to your Clipboard"

Now of course I just X out of that and do not send anything.

But how am I going to get rid of that 04 box in hijackthis?? :)

Here is my Ewido scan report
(while this was scanning it alerted me of some infections...I removed the trojans, and then i selected "none" for the action for the spyware stuff, b/c I was not sure...and the directions mentioned to go with none if I was unsure):

That's ok. We'll get rid of that O4 entry soon, but let's allow Ewido to fix what it detected there...they're all bad, so you may set Ewido to the Fix action on all of those. Run Ewido in Safe Mode again and let it remove all that it finds. Save the report.

Delete this folder if it still exists -> C:\WINDOWS\bsx32\

Run CleanUp program now...no need to logoff.

Restart and post the Ewido log and a new HijackThis log.

Okay...here's another try!! :)

Ewido report:
(I went ahead and removed everything Ewido detected...and I checked the "perform action on all infections" for everything.)

Also, the other box was already checked...I believe it said something about quarantining and backup...it said it was recommended. What does that mean? It's going to be saved somewhere as a backup??

I also deleted the folder you mentioned to delete, by clicking on "delete this folder" and then emptying the recycle bin.

Thanks again greyknight! Please advise further! Are we going to be able to get rid of this?? :tazz:

Yes, it will be saved/quarantined somewhere once it's cleaned by Ewido. You may delete all the quarantines after a few days if no other problems arise.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer and uncheck the same box to enable System Restore.

Download L2MFix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune....oads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads....org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts. Then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing Enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening. After a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 or any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Restart now...

Make sure you post the above log in the forum before proceeding any further. Once you posted it, you don't have to wait for me. Just continue on with the below and post those two logs as well:

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing Enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2MFix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new HijackThis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK. Go to File->Export and save the registry somewhere as a backup. Close the Registry Editor now. Go to Start->Run and type in notepad and hit OK. Then copy and paste the following into Notepad:

REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"NI.UWFX5"=-

Save the file as "delete.reg". Make sure to save it with the quotes. Double click on it and choose Yes to merge it. You may delete the file afterwards.

Confirm to delete and when asked if you want to reboot, say Yes:

C:\Documents and Settings\Admin\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\4PEZW967\WinFixer2005ScannerInstall[1].exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\xycdd.ini
C:\WINDOWS\System32\xycdd.bak2
C:\WINDOWS\System32\xycdd.bak1

If you get a PendingOperations message, just close it and restart your computer manually.

Restart and post a new HijackThis log.

I go to the part where I was supposed to save the file as "delete.reg". So I went to save as, and then typed in "delete.reg" then I click save.
So it saves this as a document in notepad.

But I don't understand the step where I need to double click on it to merge it?
I went back into notepad and double clicked the icon that was titled delete...but this does not ask me to merge.

Please clarify this step for me. Thanks alot!!! : )
Are we nearing the end?! Sorry this is taking so long! :tazz:

You saved it with the quotes intact right? OK, try doing it again for a new notepad file and make sure that under file type->All Files is selected. Then save it as "delete.reg" again.

If that still won't work, then tell me what happens when you double click on it. Does notepad open instead? If so, then it's not saving it properly. I will make the .reg file for you and attach it to this post if that's the case.

It's gone. Good job :tazz:

Your log is clean.
