I would greatly appreciate anyone's help. I have tried to solve this one with norton/adaware/spybot with no success. Thanks for any help you can give me. I couldn't identify what would need deleting, it seems like most of that stuff is related to my anti spyware programs.

Hi, Lothar121,

Let's see if we can get things cleaned up for you...
You did not mention exactly what your problem is, but we will try our best.
Please launch HJT and tick these:
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: LinkTracker Class - {8B6DA27E-7F64-4694-8F8F-DC87AB8C6B22} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\qlink32.dll (file missing)

Close all windows except HJT and click "Fix Checked".

Reboot.

Please run the following online scan:
Panda ActiveScan Here. You need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Once you get to the Panda site, scroll down a bit and click on Scan your PC
  • A new window will appear; click on Check Now!
  • A new window will appear; fill in the boxes (Country, State, email addy)
  • Click on Scan Now! >
If you have never used ActiveScan before, you will be prompted to install an ActiveX control (asinst.cab) : click on Install. Panda will install the component, and then install the latest signature files.
  • From "Select a device to scan...", choose "My Computer"
  • Allow the scan to run. It'll take a while.
  • When complete, click on "See Report", and then on "Save report"; save it to a convenient location.
  • Please post that report in your next reply. Simply open the text file, then copy/paste the content here. Also, please include a fresh HJT log. Thanks!

Bugbatter, thank you for such a timely response. You are correct, I did not describe my problem, so here it is.

Problem: I am getting pop ups that are coming up in my browser being ignored by the windows pop up blocker and google toolbar. I have removed several things from within spybot, adaware, and norton, but it's like there is a "master file" that continues to spawn these malacious files. Anyways I am going to try your directions, thanks again very helpful :tazz:

I will let you all know how it goes.

Thank you for your prompt reply.
We are making progress, but we have more work to do.

Please run these scans:
Ad-aware *
Please download Ad-aware version SE Personal 1.06 from one of these locations:
http://castlecops.co...s-file-451.html
http://www.download....4-10045910.html
http://www.majorgeek...ownload506.html
Install by double-clicking on the downloaded file.
If you have a previous version of Ad-Aware installed, during the installation of the new version you will be prompted to uninstall or keep the older version - be sure to uninstall the previous version.
1. Launch Ad-Aware SE and run the WebUpdate feature. (Click on the Globe icon > Click connect > Click OK > Click Finish.)
2. Set up the Configurations as follows:
-- Click the Gear wheel at the top of the Ad-Aware window
-- Click General > Safety & Settings: Check (Green) all three.
-- Click Tweak > Cleaning Engine > UNcheck "Always try to unload modules before deletion".
3. Click "Proceed"
4. Click "Scan Now"
5. Deselect "Search for negligible risk entries" as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
6. Select "Search for low-risk threats"
7. Run the scanner using the Full Scan (Perform full system scan) mode.
8. When the scan has completed, select Next.
9. In the Scanning Results window, select the "Scan Summary" tab.
10. Check the box next to each "target family" you wish to remove.
11. Click next > Click OK.
12. Shutdown/restart

Spybot S&D*
Download Spybot S&D 1.4 here:
http://safer-network...2005-05-31.html
or
http://www.majorgeek...wnload2471.html

Install by double-clicking on the downloaded file.
Run Spybot S&D from desktop icon or Start menu.
Press "Search for updates" button to get list of updates available.
Press "Download updates" button.
Close all IE windows and close & restart Spybot S&D.
Press "Check for problems" button.
Have SpyBot remove all it marks in RED by pressing "Fix selected problems".
Close Spybot S&D, reboot your system.
** NOTE: The servers have been busy. If you get "Bad Checksum" after trying to update, it means that you should try another server, or you can wait until later and try again. If you have to wait too long, just skip Spybot and proceed with the rest of these instructions.

Try going to Add/Remove Programs and looking for SurfAccuracy.
If it is listed, uninstall it.

Delete the specified folder(s) if it (they) still exist:
C:\PROGRAM FILES\SurfAccuracy
C:\PROGRAM FILES\sacc

Delete the specified file if it still exists:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\PreUninstallQL.exe

Reboot.

Please download CCleaner from one of these locations:
http://www.majorgeek...wnload4191.html
http://www.ccleaner.com/
http://www.filehippo...d_ccleaner.html

Once installed, launch CCleaner:
Do not change any settings, except to make sure on the Options tab>Advanced "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours" is NOT checked.
Click Run Cleaner (bottom right). When finished> Exit (top right) (reboot)

You have a few optional items that can be fixed with HJT. They use resources and may be unnecessary depending on your needs. Fixing them here will not prevent you from running them manually if needed.
If you decide to fix these, boot into Safemode by tapping on the F8 key as the computer boots. When the menu appears, use the arrow key to select "Safemode".

Launch HJT and tick these if you do not use them:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinampAgent] C:\Program Files\Winamp\winampa.exe
(The WinAmp Agent. This puts a WinAmp icon is your system tray. It is completely unnecessary, and some viruses may hide in this file. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinampAgent] C:\Program Files\Winamp\winampa.exe
(Loads the System Tray icon for the WinAmp media player. This can be used to mantain file associations so programs like QuickTime and RealPlayer do not take over as default player for various media types. Available via Start -> Programs. If you do not use WinAmp constantly, removing this entry will free up some system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] \"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe\" -osboot
(RealPlayer scheduler -- Unnecessary.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
(Adds a tray bar icon which links to the Apple QuickTime video streaming tool. This program is a non-essential system process, and is installed for ease of use. )

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_04\bin\jusched.exe
(Sun Java update scheduler that checks for updates -- Unnecessary.)

Close all windows except HJT and click "Fix Checked".

Reboot normally.
Please post a fresh log for final review, and let me know if your problem has been resolved. Thanks. :tazz:

Well, I was just at Wellsfargo paying some bills and I had some odd advertisements pop up from them...

World's largest casino
Orange Lutheran High School
Mortgage Calculator

It seems that my pop up blockers should have killed these, I have my windows one set on block all pop ups and I have google tool bar on as a back up, but these things still came up. The casino one strikes me as the most obvious one, there has to still be some type of infection.

I followed the directions you gave me, so I'm not sure what to do now. I will update you with any other problems I notice. (p.s. the system seems a little snappier! :tazz:)

Another quick little update:

I ran Ad-Aware full system scan-
3 critical objects found- Tracking cookies

I removed them. Spybot found nothing.

Another update:

I am noticing that when I browse the web, at the bottom where it shows what url you are loading, it will sometimes go to ad.doubleclick.net

Under privacy settings I have this URL blocked but that does not seem to help. Hope this helps because I think this is the source of the pop ups.

Edit: Btw, I just realized that I did not have the latest Ad-Aware version. It turns out there was a new one released just a few days ago. I will run the updated version now. Sorry but I honestly thought I had just upgraded it. Anyways going to see what happens.

Thanks for the info.
A few suggestions:
1. Now that you have Spybot, you can use the Immunize feature to block bad downloads and bad products.

2. Are you using SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard? If not, I will give you info on those later.

3. Have you tried a HOSTS file?
There is an example for blocking ad.doubleclick.net mentioned here: http://en.wikipedia....wiki/Hosts_file
If a HOSTS file seems too complicated to set up, leave that until last if nothing else works.

Your log appears to be clean.

Let's give ewido a try just to be sure nothing is hiding:
Please follow the instructions provided. You may want to print out these instructions and use them as a reference.

First:
Please download ewido security suite trial version.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
Please reboot into Safemode:
Turn on the computer.
Immediately begin tapping the F8 key (or F5 on some computers)
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the Enter key.
*Click on ewido>scanner
Then select "Settings"
Under the bottom section "What to Scan?" make sure "Scan every file" is checked.
Select "OK" and you will return to scanning options.
*Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.

This scan can take quite a while to run, so please be patient .
While the scan is in progress, you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose Clean. Then put a check next to 'Perform action on all infections' . Doing this, enables the scan to proceed automatically until its completion. Click OK

When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again. The best place to save it would probably be your Desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
Please copy and paste the results from that scan back to this topic for review. Also include a fresh HJT log so we can see if anything new has installed.

*Note: Ewido is a free trial product for 14 days. After that you can purchase it for full features OR you can also keep the free version to use as an on-demand scanner (recommended).
You will still be able to manually update Ewido using the *update* button

::Report End

Everything is immunized with spybot. I'm not using spywareblaster nor spywareguard. I just have the norton 05 autoprotect thing..

I have never tried a HOSTS file and I don't understand exactly how that would work to set it up.

You and ewido did a good job!
Your HJT log still seems to be clean. Make sure your IE (Tools>Internet Options>Privacy) does NOT accept "Third Party Cookies".

What I would do at this point is to get TODAY'S update for ewido. Run another scan with ewido (You won't need to post a log -- just let it clean if it finds anything.).

Run CCleaner again to clean up any Temporary Internet Files, etc..

Following that, if everything seems to be running well,
it would be good to flush System Restore and create a clean Restore Point.
(Using XP, you must be logged in as Administrator to do this.)
Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.
When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.
Check the box labeled Turn Off System Restore.
Reboot.
Go back in and turn System Restore ON. A new Restore Point will be created.

Are there any other accounts on the computer? If so, post (in this topic) a log from the next account.

If there are no additional logs to analyze, I will post my list of Prevention Tips which include links for downloading SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard..

Okay I finished my last couple of steps except the system restore. There are no other accounts on the computer :tazz:. I'm still getting a few pop ups completely cookie related. I can remove them but then they just come back. I guess I'm ready for spyware blaster and spyware guard.

The cookies come back if you go to the websites that are using them. Run Ad-aware and ewido frequently if they bother you. Web cookies are bits of software placed on your computer when you browse websites. Not all websites have these, but many do, especially the large well-known websites. Not all cookies are bad. Websites use cookies so they can track what you are viewing. That way the site will recognize your computer when you come back to visit again.

Here is my standard list of simple steps that you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

You may have already taken some of these steps:
1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
Windows Update: http://v4.windowsupd.../en/default.asp

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to 'prompt', and 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'disable'.

3. Download and install the following free programs:
a. SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacools...areblaster.html
b. SpywareGuard: http://www.javacools...ywareguard.html
Periodically check for updates.

4. Keep your antivirus software and firewall software up to date.
Note: Zone Alarm Firewall (Zone Labs) http://www.zonelabs....ontent/home.jsp is free.
Also Sygate has an optional free version: http://smb.sygate.com/download_buy.htm

5. You might consider installing Mozilla / Firefox.
http://www.mozilla.org/

6. I would check for updates in SpyBot once a week or so.
Check for updates in Adaware frequently.

If you have recently installed ewido, it is a free trial product for 14 days. After that you can purchase it for full features OR you can also keep the free version to use as an on-demand scanner (recommended).
You will still be able to manually update Ewido using the *update* button

7. Before using or purchasing any Spyware/Malware protection/removal program, always check the Rogue/Suspect Spyware List. It will save you a lot of grief, as well as money if you are thinking of purchasing. Here is the link: http://www.spywarewa...nti-spyware.htm
If you want to know just how effective your anti-spyware program is, or how well any of the "rogue" programs listed at the above link work, check this for an independent comparison of several anti-spyware programs: http://www.spywarewa...-test-guide.htm

8. I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

9. You might want to take a look at this article, too.
