Hi! It's me again, now on the second computer. I hope you didn't think that I had neglected to get back to you because I definitely plan to send you a little something when all of this is done. I would be an unforgivable ingrate if I just disappeared and never showed any more appreciation than I already have.

On my second computer, the problems are a lot subtler than they were on the first so I'm actually not sure whether I've fixed it or not. I've run CleanUp, AdAware, Spybot, ewido, Trendmicro, and Trojan Hunter, and I've cleaned out tons of stuff. I've now rebooted and I'm not noticing any problems yet, but as I said it's harder to tell on this one so I was wondering if you could just have a look at my HJT log and see if you notice anything that needs attention. If not, I'll assume that everything's good until I have evidence to the contrary.

Edited to add:
The system definitely still has problems. It's running slowly and "jerkily", for lack of a better word, and it just now rebooted without warning and without prompting, and when it came back on there were some really odd error messages. I'll *greatly* appreciate anything you can tell me.

This is definately not as bad as the other one. Not sure this will clean it up, but like last time, we'll take it one step at a time.

There are quite a few programs available that offer protection features to help keep a computer from getting infected. While this is normally a helpful feature, it can keep a victim from making the changes necessary to clean their comptuer. Please read the following and uninstall or disable those that apply to your machine.

Really?? 'Cause it's not running well at all. It keeps hanging for several minutes at a time, and periodically it reboots itself for no apparent reason and without any warning. Other than that, there's no obvious sign of malware (popups, etc), but I thought that's what it must be because it was doing great until one day when... well, it's a long story, but the short version is that all the trouble started only after one of my nieces had been online. (She didn't do anything on purpose; she just didn't know what she was doing and we think she may have gotten onto a malicious site of some sort, maybe by clicking on an ad that she saw elsewhere.)

With regard to the fix that you mentioned, will that affect the functioning of ieSpell? I use that a *lot* and don't really want to lose it. Of course, I can always reinstall it; I just need to know whether I'll need to do so. Also, if that doesn't fix my problems, is there anything else you would suggest that I try, or can you suggest someone else that I could talk to? You didn't mention whether I should send you any more logs, but I'll send you the HJT and the SR ones again just in case you need them.

I'm sorry to be so much trouble. Thanks for everything.

Download and save backlight to your desktop. Doubleclick blbeta.exe, accept the agreement, leave [X]scan through Windows Explorer checked, click scan > next.

You'll see a list of all the items it found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (where xxxxxxx represents numbers). The application finds both bad files and legitimate ones such as "wbemtest.exe", so don't choose the rename option yet! Copy and paste the log it generated in your next reply.

Here is a great tutorial on some things you can do to make your ocmputer more efficient.

And... you remember that I said the computer keeps rebooting itself for no apparent reason? Well, I thought it might help if I gave you a little more information about that. 1. Click Start.

2. Click Run.

3. Type SFC /scannow in the run command slot. (Note: there is a space after SFC and that's a FORWARD slash in the middle, there.)

4. Press OK button below on run command menu box..

It will ask for your operating system disc/CD. Put it in your CD-ROM, and let it work.

Yipes... that could be a problem, but I hope I can work it out. My brother gave this computer to my mother and he didn't give her any of the software, so I'll have to contact him and see if he even has the CD-ROM. I hope he does. I'll let you know as soon as I know.

If not, I assume our only remaining option will be to reformat the hard drive. Right? I didn't want to do that, but if that's all I can do that's what I'll do.
