After following your "steps before posting log" recommendations, lockx.exe keeps trying to run each time I log in. I ran the following: WinsockXPFix, CleanUp!, Ad-aware SE, CW Shredder, Spybot S&D, Ewido Security Suite, Trend Housecall, AVG, TrojanHunter, and Windows Update (no high-priority updates were available).

I also ran the LQfix.exe after reading some of your other postings on locks.exe. I also disabled lockx.exe in Spybot's System Start-up tool, and this prevented lockx.exe from reappearing on the next login. Unfortunately, it's added a couple more entries to the System Start-up again, and reappears yet again on each login.

Finally, I'm at your mercy for help. Here's my HJT log file after trying all the above steps...

  • Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    O16 - DPF: {DBA230D1-8467-4e69-987E-5FAE815A3B45} -
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: ddccd - ddccd.dll (file missing)

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System

  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now. In addition, please tell me if there are any more malware problems that you are aware of.
Regards,

Trevuren

Did the 2 HJT fixes as recommended.

Shortly after lockx.exe I had problems with pokapoka70.exe. I was able to get rid of this by running through all my spyware/anti-virus stuff (I don't remember which one fixed it). For a while, I had a new toolbar that looked pretty bogus. It may have been related to pokapoka.

CW Shredder did find something. I'm not certain what it was, but it may have been related to the VX2 malware. I noticed this because CWShredder usually doesn't find anything.

Here's my latest HJT...

The pokapoka and releated history I described in the previous post all occurred and were fixed prior to my original post. I am giving the info as recent history (last few days) that seems to be related to the lockx.exe infection. I was able to get rid of everything, but the lockx problem before consulting Geeks-to-Go forum...

Elitum (pokapoka....) and the lockx worm often travel together.

It is not recommend to have 2 Antivirus Applications running at the same time because they often cause conflicts within the system and can even make the system more prone to picking up infections. I would recommend keeping one and using a good online virus remover (like Panda) once a week.

Your log looks good. If you have no more malware-related problems that you are aware of, just give me the OK and we can start the final but essential cleanup procedures.

And even more recent history that I just suffered through last week...

I installed MS Windows Antispyware (beta) recently and began having the Winfixer problems within a day or so afterward. I ended up uninstalling the Windows Anitspyware during the Winfixer removal after reading of many similar problems with other users of the Windows Antispyware product...

I'm aware of the multiple anti-virus issue, and believe I only run with AVG. The Norton stuff came with my computer purchase, but I disabled it because it was only free for 90-days.

Everything looks good now.

Thank you very much for your help.

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Reconfigure Windows XP to hide hidden files:
  • Click Start. Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
  • Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
  • Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
2. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
  • Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
  • Left click on "System Restore Tab"
  • Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
  • Left click on "Apply"
TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
  • Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
  • Click on "Apply"
Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)

Regards,
