Hi alfred and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

1. If you haven't logged in go to Geeks to Go and do so. Then proceed to item a.

If you already have logged in, go directly to item a.
  • Click on My Controls at the top right hand corner of the window.
  • In the left hand column, click "View Topics"
  • If you click on the title of your post, you will be taken there
2. Also, while at the My Controls page, check the box to the right of your post and then scroll down.
.Where it says "unsubscribe" click the pull-down menu and select "immediate email notification"

3. Please DELETE your current HJT program from its present location.

4. Download and run the following HijackThis autoinstall program from Here . Please choose the default location of C:\Program Files\ as the destination. HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click SCAN and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')
  • POST the log into this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

This may not work the first time around. I suspect that it is a different type of infection with a key file not yet showing. This should at least clean up most of the mess and hopefully make the hidden file reappear.

Please save these instructions to a text file in Wordpad or print them out because we will be restarting in Safe Mode and you will have no Internet Connection
  • Make sure you can view all Hidden Files
  • Download CWShredder.
  • Save CWShredder.exe to a convenient location.
  • Please Do Not Use It Yet.
  • Download AboutBuster.
  • Unzip AboutBuster.zip and it will install in it's own folder.
  • Double-click on AboutBuster.exe and then click 'OK' then 'Update'
  • Click "Check For Update" and then "Download Update".
  • Click "Exit"
  • Please Do Not Use It Yet.
Disconnect From The Internet

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and tap F8 repeatedly while booting up and choose Safe Mode at the menu.

In Safe Mode Please Clean with CWShredder
  • Please Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
  • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
  • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
  • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
In Safe Mode Please Use AboutBuster
  • Please Double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
  • Click "OK" then "Start" and then "OK" to allow AboutBuster to scan for all bad files.
  • Click "Yes" when About Buster asks if you will allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
  • Allow AboutBuster to scan for all malicious files.
  • Repeat the scan if it asks to do another.
  • After the scan, click "Save Log". Post the log in your next post as it is necessary to make sure all has been cleaned
  • Then Click "Exit"
This infection often deletes necessary system files.
Reboot your computer back into normal mode so that we can see if any files need to be restored.
  • This infection deletes the windows file, shell.dll.

If you are using XP,2000, or NT please download shell.dll from here: shell-dll.zip. Once the file is downloaded uncompress the zip file and copy shell.dll to the following locations:
    C:\Windows\system32
    C:\Windows\system

If you are using Windows 98/ME please download shell.dll from here: shell98-dll.zip. Once the file is downloaded uncompress the zip file and copy shell.dll to the following locations
    C:\Windows\system
  • Download the Hoster from here. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program. This will restore the original deleted Hosts file.
  • If you have Spybot S&D installed you will also need to replace one file. Go here: Merijn's Files (sdhelper) and download SDHelper.dll. Copy the file to the folder containing you Spybot S&D program (normally C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy). Then click Start > Run > regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SDHelper.dll" and press the OK button
  • If you are using Windows 95, 98, or ME it is possible that the malware deleted your control.exe. Please check for the existence of this file by going to to Merijn Files control.exe and examine where the file should be for your operating system. If the file is missing then download the appropriate file and place it in the proper place according to this information.
  • There are several other files that are not targeted as often as the above, but new copies of them can be downloaded from
    Merijn Files
Online Antivirus Scan
  • Please Clean out temporary files:
  • Start> Run> then type cleanmgr and click enter
  • Please put a check mark beside Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin
  • Let cleanmgr scan your system and remove the files indicated
Reboot and Post a New HijackThis Log and your About Buster Log in this thread, using Add Reply to see what is left to clean.

hi trevuren,
so, i did it the way you told in the fourth posting without updating aboutbuster. the cwshredder-scan rans successful, but after scanning with aboutbuster followed an errorreport
"runtime error '339' component 'comctl32.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly..." so i can't post you the logfile.
anyway, i did the following steps as you wrote, but couldn't find the "sdHelper.dll" at your link, so i downloaded it from this location: http://net-integrati...indowfiles.html
i hope, it was right.
so here is the new logfile, hope everythings right

Hey Alfred, if it worked, it must be OK :tazz: You will have to keep a close eye on your system for a little while to make sure it doesn't relapse,

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
  • First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:
    • Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
    • Choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
    • Uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
    • Close the window with ok
  • Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
    O2 - BHO: Class - {350B3F55-CC15-3682-2B86-1463147D7290} - C:\WINDOWS\appoa.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: Class - {8BF96D1C-572C-F494-1F31-30C24001C6B0} - C:\WINDOWS\crjx32.dll (file missing)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [9.tmp] C:\DOKUME~1\alfred\LOKALE~1\Temp\9.tmp.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [javadl32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\javadl32.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [crxy.exe] C:\WINDOWS\crxy.exe

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
    • Press Enter.
  • Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if they are present):

    C:\WINDOWS\appoa.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\crjx32.dll
    C:\DOKUME~1\alfred\LOKALE~1\Temp\9.tmp.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\javadl32.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\crxy.exe

  • Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now.

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Reconfigure Windows XP to hide hidden files:
  • Click Start. Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
  • Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
  • Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
2. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
  • Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
  • Left click on "System Restore Tab"
  • Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
  • Left click on "Apply"
TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
  • Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
  • Click on "Apply"
Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)

Regards,

Trevuren
