Recently I have been getting winfixer popups when I access or change sites on the internet and would like to remove everything about them. Also when I tried to boot to the safe mode I got a black screen with white corners.

Also note, one must be either logged in under the Administrator account or have administrator privileges to be able to successfully complete these procedures

1. Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please REBOOT your computer into Safe Mode.
  
  You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  
  
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.

• Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
• Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

3. Download and install CleanUp!

• Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
• Set the program up as follows:
• Click "Options..."
• Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
• Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

[*]Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
[*]It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

I followed your instructions but have a couple of problems. 1. When I downloaded Vundofix I could not find a vundofix.exe file to double click. 2. When I booted to the safe mode I got a message: Windows could not start. File is missing or corrupt."<windows root>\system32\hal.dll". re-install a copy of the above file.

Your Windows OS appears to be corrupt.

First let's try a simple repair, we may get lucky:

1. Please go to Start -> Run -> type cmd and press Enter.

2. At the command prompt type sfc /scannow, making sure to put a space between the "c" and the slash, and then press Enter. This will run the System File Checker.

3. Follow the prompts, and insert your Windows installation CD if requested.

4. Then please REBOOT your computer.

Thanks for wishing me luck, I need some. I still can't boot into the safe mode. I ran scannow and it asked for the xp disk. 3 rescue disks came with my computer and it didn't want any of them. What now?

* Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

* Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

Hi Trevuren,

Winfix popups are gone. There are a couple of things that you might want to know about your instructions though. 1. The link for Killbox didn't work for me. 2. The file menu didn't offer a Paste from Clipboard option. I cut and pasted in the box it has for the file name.

You are still infected with VUNDO. Inasmuch as you don't seem to be able to access your system through Safe Mode, we can still try the more difficult approach through the Recovery Console.

Note: I need you to do 2 things in preparation for the next step:

• Find your original Windows CD, and
• Become familiar with the content of the following article by Microsoft RECOVERY CONSOLE
