Hi dmlwol and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

1. If you haven't logged in go to Geeks to Go and do so. Then proceed to item a.

If you already have logged in, go directly to item a.
  • Click on My Controls at the top right hand corner of the window.
  • In the left hand column, click "View Topics"
  • If you click on the title of your post, you will be taken there
2. Also, while at the My Controls page, check the box to the right of your post and then scroll down.
.Where it says "unsubscribe" click the pull-down menu and select "immediate email notification"

3. Please DELETE your current HJT program from its present location.

4. Download and run the following HijackThis autoinstall program from Here . Please choose the default location of C:\Program Files\ as the destination. HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click SCAN and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')
  • POST the log into this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Regards,

Trevuren

Your system has an About:Blank infection as well as other less serious infections.

1. Download the stand alone version of CWShredder
  • Save the program to your Desktop
  • Click on the CWShredder icon, then on the RUN button
  • Click on "Check for Updates"
  • Once the program is updated, close it until needed. DO NOT USE IT NOW
2. If you do not have a zip program please download and install the evaluation version of Winzip.

3. Download SpSeHjfix.zip to the desktop.
  • Then right click on the desktop and select new >folder, name it spfix.
  • Unzip SpSeHjfix.zip into the new folder.
4. Disconnect from the net and Close ALL OPEN PROGRAMS.

5. Run 'SpSeHjfix'. and click on "Start Disinfection".

When it's finished it will reboot your machine to finish the cleaning process.
The tool creates a log of the fix which will appear in the folder.

If it doesn't find any of the SE files or any hidden reinstallers it will say system clean and not go on to next stage

6. Once it is finished run CWShredder - Hit The FIX button!

7. Reboot and post a new HJT log and the log that was created by 'SpSeHjfix'.

Warning Note: On a few occasions it has been reported that after using the SPSEHjfix you cannot open Internet Explorer. To fix this, go into Control Panel >Internet Options >Programs & press reset web settings, then you can set your home page to what you want on the general tab.

Regards,

Trevuren

    • Click the + (plus) sign next to the Cleaning Engine section. This will expand the section.
    • Make sure these items have a green check next to them. If they do not, click once on the circle next to them to put a green checkmark in it.:
      • "Always try to unload modules before deletion"
      • "During removal, unload Explorer and IE if necessary"
      • "Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot"
      • "Delete quarantined objects after restoring"
  • Once you are done with these settings, click "Proceed" to save them.
  • This will take you back to the main screen.
B. 1. Please download AboutBuster

2. Do NOT check for updates as the host site being down , the check for updates will make the downloaded file unusable.

C. Download and unzip HSfix to your desktop. from HERE

The above Registry file was written specifically for this infection and is not to be used on any other infection as it could damage a person's PC

D. Download CWSShredder

E. Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.
Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

F. Reboot into SafeMode. <---MAKE SURE YOU KNOW HOW TO DO THIS!!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Here's the fix:

1. Reboot into safe mode

2 CLOSE ALL WINDOWS AND BROWSERS Scan with Hijack This and put a checkmark beside the following items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\qdbjx.dll/sp.html#44768
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\se.dll/sp.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Stationery\Blank.htm
O2 - BHO: Class - {4FCF6FBD-0BAC-A2C9-5564-0407F96F6E0B} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\msjy.dll
O2 - BHO: Class - {1F229039-6F6E-8545-7436-798A698742A9} - (no file)

O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://bar.mywebsear...?p=ZNxdm414BBUS
O8 - Extra context menu item: &AOL Toolbar Search - c:\program files\aol\aol toolbar 2.0\resources\en-US\local\search.html

Click on Fix Checked and EXIT HijackThis.

3. Using Windows Explorer, (or in the case of files where there is no complete path provided use the Windows Search Function), DELETE the following files/folders with all their content, if present:

C:\WINDOWS\qdbjx.dll
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\se.dll
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Stationery\Blank.htm
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\msjy.dll

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

4. Double click on the HSfix and when asked to merge say yes.

5. Run CW-Shredder - Hit the FIX button - let it run and fix what it finds.

6. Run About Buster

A. Start with "Begin Removal".

B. If by any chance , check for update is done and error is shown , just unzip the downloadable zip file again and overwrite the existing AboutBuster which will bring back the original file again.

7. Run Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06:
  • Click the "Start" button.
  • Uncheck the "Search for negligible risk entries" entry.
  • Choose the "Use custom scanning options" scan mode.
  • Click the "Next" button.
  • Ad-Aware will begin to scan for malware residing on your computer.
  • Allow the scan to finish.
  • Right-click on any entry in the list and click "Select All" to select the whole list.
  • Click "Next" and choose "OK" at the prompt to quarantine and remove the objects.

8. Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:
  • Temporary Files
  • Temporary Internet Files
  • Recycle Bin
9. Reboot into normal mode and open up Internet Explorer

10. Download and run this online virus scan if you can:<---Important
http://housecall.tre.../start_corp.asp
Make sure you check "AutoClean"

11. Reboot and post a fresh HJT log back here by using the add reply button below, and lets see how we did. [/b]

Your log looks good. If you have no more malware-related problems that you are aware of, just give me the OK and we can start the final but essential cleanup procedures.

As far as I know I do not have any more problems. Which of those anti-virus spyware preventers do you recommend to use everyday?
Thanks for all your help!!

1. Cleanup is an excellent program that you should run 1/week

2. EWIDO is the cat's meow (I'm dating myself with that expression). You can still use the program after the trial period expires but the Guard function is disabled and you must do your definition updates manually. A small price to pay for this FREE program. I have it on my machine and love it.

3. All my protection programs are free and are the ones used on your log except my antivirus. AVG7 FREE is also an excellent antivirus.

4. There is absolutely no reason to surf unprotected these days when all these programs and cleanup programs are available FREE of charge. Tell your friends and become their best buddy for life. Save them the ordeal you went through.

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Reconfigure Windows XP to hide hidden files:
  • Click Start. Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
  • Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
  • Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
2. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
  • Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
  • Left click on "System Restore Tab"
  • Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
  • Left click on "Apply"
TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
  • Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
  • Click on "Apply"
Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)
