A couple of weeks ago, I started having several problems with my computer.

1) Links within emails in Outlook Express will not open by clicking on them. I must copy the shortcut, open a browser window and paste the link.

2) Popups are bombarding me. I have gone through the steps for killing this, but I am still getting them.

I don't know if these two events are related, but they started occurring at the same time. I am posting my HiJack This scan. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and Welcome to Geekstogo

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, please download and install AdAware SE 1.06.
Check Here on how setup and use it - please make sure you update it first.
And perform a scan, make sure you delete all the items in red

Restart your computer now.

If you have not already installed Spybot S&D 1.4
Download Spybot S&D, make sure you update it, and then perform a full scan, make sure you delete every item found.

Restart your computer now.

After your computer has restarted, Scan with hijack this and post your log here.

If you have already performed a full scan with these two programs, please tell me so

Please also do the following to see if any programs need to be removed
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the configure button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Open the Misc Tools Session"
  • Click on the Box that says "Uninstall Manager"
  • Click on the button "Save list"
  • Copy and past the List onto your post

All of those programs have been installed as they were part of the process suggested before posting for help. That process has been followed.

The problem with popups has been resolved, however I still have the issue with Outlook Express. Links within emails will not open with a left click. I have to right click, copy shortcut and paste into Internet Explorer address bar. This issue began the same time the popups did, but I don't know if they are related. Someone at Atribune.com has helped me some but so far has not found a solution to this problem. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. The most recent HJT log is included.

I have also noticed another problem. I don't know if it is related to any of the other issues, but I thought I'd see if you can help. When I insert a disk into any of my CD or DVD drives, the auto load feature is not working. In most cases, I can manually run what ever disk I put in, but even when looking under "My Computer" it is not showing what disks are in the drives. I am including the newest HJT log I have run.

Hello,

Please print out and/or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Download CleanUp!.
If that doesn’t work, use this link.
Install the program but don’t use it yet.

***
Please download, install, and update the free version of Ewido trojan scanner:
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Run Ewido --- When you run it for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet.
***
Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

***
Start hijackthis and put a check at the following lines

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 –k
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Emmt] C:\Program Files\prih\ltmc.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Offftj] C:\WINDOWS\system32\r?gedit.exe

now click fix checked
and close hijackthis

***
We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Now remove the following folder

C:\Program Files\prih

Thenm i want you to look for the following file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\r?gedit.exe
Where the questionmark is, another letter must be visible
Note you are not looking for the legit regedit.exe, but it must have another name.

Don’t do anything wit it just tell me its name.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options"
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Scan local drives for temporary files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

Once it's done, press Close, you can be asked if you want to log off or restart but click NO first we are donig one more thing

Run ewido
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

***
Now reboot back in windows’ normal mode

Make and post a fresh hijackthis log and post it here together wit the outcome of ewido and the result of searching for that ?file

Good luck

I hve no more problems currently with popups, I do still have the other problems. When I insert a disk into any of my CD or DVD drives, the auto load feature is not working. In most cases, I can manually run what ever disk I put in, but even when looking under "My Computer" it is not showing what disks are in the drives. I still have the issue with Outlook Express. Links within emails will not open with a left click. I have to right click, copy shortcut and paste into Internet Explorer address bar. If you have any info that could help with this it would be great.

the best thing ican do is wait for you to follow the instructions you were given, post back the results i asked for and then i will continue in my search what that problem might be.
but i first need to see what i asked for don't forget you probably still got malicious file aborad like the one i asked you to investigate.

i will be checking this topic regularly.
