Hi,
The problem: my computer goes incredibly slow. It takes ages to open big files, see pictures, browse the internet, and all the time i hear this typical noise that means the HD is being accessed.
I've got broadband and it works fine, the downloadind speed is what it should be.

The things is that i've got a pentium II processor at 433 MHz and a 64 MB RAM

I haven't a clue about what i should upgrade. Is my HD too slow? Is my processor slow?
perhaps a don't have enough RAM?

help!! :tazz:

Download Everest Home Edition and run it, and post the results here and we can tell you what you need. Without the full system specs no one can be sure what is best or even possible to do.

To be honest with you, a 433MHz Celeron processor is slow, and 64MB RAM is nothing. Depending on your budget, the first thing I'd upgrade is the memory. You want at least 128mb (or more) for what you are running. You should notice a small improvement with this economical upgrade. :tazz:

As you only have two memory slots, you could get a 256MB memory stick if you intend to keep the PC

The hard drive appears full and this would contribute to performance issues

This will rebuild rather than restore the registry and also replace missing or corrupt system files

Boot the PC and keep tapping F8 right after the beep until you get options, select command prompt only, type scanreg.exe /fix then press enter, it will run through a few screens then say registry repaired. Press enter then press ctrl + alt + delete keys together to reboot.

When it has loaded, click start, all programmes, accessories, system tools, system information, tools then run system file checker and replace any files it asks for from the 98 CD then reboot.

Click start then programmes, accessories, system tools to run disc defragmenter

Have you been to Windows Update recently

Here's the Intel page for your mobo.

http://www.intel.com.../desktop/ca810/

I'd say download the manual and updated specs for it and look over the other stuff. It will only support up to 800mhz Pentium III chips but you can still do a lot with that. If you can update the BIOS, do it, be sure to follow the instructions very carefully on BIOS upgrades.

One thing for sure is that your HDD is too small and full, and you don't have enough memory for anything but web browsing and downloading. If you're on a budget go to a computer repair place and see it you can't get a larger faster drive. I saw an 80gb drive on sale at Best Buy for $30.00 that you could use, and it would speed things up alot. You can use the drive to drive copy supplied with the HDD to copy your whole OS over to the new drive. Then redefragment the drive. If you decided to get another machine you could always the the new drive in it as a slave, so look at it as an investment.

And if you're running apps at least double your memory.

All these suggestions are very good and you do need to upgrade or maybe buy a new computer but your cpu is currently running at 100% and your memory is all used up this will make your computer run slower than you are used to, it could be from having to many apps but I doubt that would make the cpu run at 100%.

Have you scanned for viruses using a updated scanner?
Have you scanned for spyware?

You may want to read this and try cleaning up your computer.

Very good point Doby has. If you have malware you don't want to copy it over to a new hard drive, get rid of it first.

Hi again,

I've added 128 MB to my RAM memory and it has really improved a lot. However it was quite expensive (£35) so i scrapped the idea of 256 MB in one go.
For the moment i cant' afford to buy a new HD drive (incredibly expensive).
Thanks a milion, anyway

Cheers,

Too late for the memory but you could check these for a hard drive
