Hi and thanks for being here. I have several games from the Reflexive Arcade site. I have never had any problem installing, running, or playing any of them. Till now.
Psychoballs, is the game I am referring to. After install and registration, I clicked the 'Return to Game' to start playing, the screen goes black - an audible beep and an error message box appears stating "Unable to set graphics mode" which waits for me to click on the 'OK' button before returning to the programs closing screen. You know the one that thanks you for playing the game and gives you options of Play Game, Other Games, the X to close the window and also tells you the window will close automatically in 15,14,13....seconds. [[note - after posting this I went back and checked Dungeon Scroll, this game does not run on my system either, basically similar in that the install and registration were alike until the return to play game, at this point screen goes black and there is no error message, no audio beep and when I bring up the task manager [ctrl/alt/del] to end the program, as this seems the only way to escape the "blackened hole I am trapped in", I am surprised that it does NOT show the familiar 'not responding' comment next to the program name. ]]

To give you some idea, I'm able to run these games successfully - Ricochet [LostWorlds/Recharged, etal...] Bejeweled2, Zuma, JewelQuest, Cubis2, Schroomz, Luxor are the newest ones, I have others as well -
I have tried to uninstall and reinstall. Same results. I took it to my neighbors system; it installed and played just fine. [She said thanks, she loves playing it ] She purchased her HP system as a package about 18mo ago from Circut City, [big sale/good deal] it was just a generic all around semi-current technology at the time system, not any sort of multimedia/heavyduty gaming system package or anything with extraordinary resources, etc.
I have recently checked for updates to drivers and critical/security updates. I am not a big gamer - just a fan of some small amusements. I don't think these are too demanding for my system, but perhaps this is the issue, I am hoping you will be able to let me know. I have also just finished downloading but have not yet installed the latest DirectX. I will run it as soon as I sign off here, will let you know if the situation resolves itself.
FYI - I am running a Gateway System, XPPro P3 930MHz, 512 RAM, mainboard - Intel WL810E, Video 82810E graphics controller.
As always your suggestions are appreciated. What other information can I provide to assist?

Thanks to whomever for putting my plea "on the right track"

I went back to the Reflexive site and checked on system requirements for the games and I feel a little foolish [did I mention it was a distracting day in my world?] but I think it may be that my resources are "lacking" in the area of the video card, but I need someone to confirm this for me as I am not well versed in the hardware arena - especially relating to display - far too many amazing branches of technology springing up daily, for me to get a clue.

The system req for Psychoballs : [err msg- 'unable to set graphics mode' program closes on its own after acknowledging error]

These requirements only seem to reinforce my confusion, I was hoping to see some sort of consistency in either the ones that did OR did not run, but ...... seems like a mix either way.... but that is presuming the info displayed is correct...... hmmmmm......

I am not able to read your full first post but update to the latest DirectX and also update your Graphic Card to the latest reboot and retry the game!

To find out your system specs download and run Belarc Advisor. Belarc will then analyse your hardware and display a report. Post the report here and we'll take a look.

I did the directx upgrade and nothing new for the vid card. Rebooted system. Still same error msg when I try to run the program.

Okay guys I made it back - just a week late - sorry-
I found and did the Belarc thing. Pretty interesting little print out. Thanks for the education. I found a failed critical update which I corrected and found a few more hotfixes that I didn't have related to the original one. Odd how they were never mentioned from the MSUdate page. [dripping sarcasm here...] I also am current with directx. I am going to copy/paste the Belarc here and will wait for your next suggestions - one more thing - I am not sure how it plays into this but I noticed the Virus protection and its comment of "Unknown"

I am using the AVG free from Grisoft and it updates and downloads daily if I am connected to the internet, runs full scan daily as well. I have not had any significant problems in this area that I know of for several months. I did have a bout with what I believe was a 'smitfraud' issue and probably would not have had any problems if my system had been allowed to take care of itself. Unfortunately I was away and others were paniced and well you get the idea, best intentions and major user error issues. I haven't fully recovered yet as I am still missing 3 tabs on my display properties window under my regular user profile. I can't change wallpaper etc. Because of this issue I have held off on installing the XPService Pack 2. I am interested in any comments or suggestions you would have for me in this area as well, I realize this really belongs under another Forum area, but I will let you tell me if it is something I need to address before we can continue with the game issues currently at hand.
I realize the copy/paste changes the original formatting of the report. If there is another preferred method of submitting the info, let me know and I will re submit.

Your graphics card is a integrated Intel 82810E, which isn't very good when it comes to running games. I would suggest buying a new graphics card.

thanks - I was afraid that might be the case. I'll see what I can come up with and see if you think it might be suitable.
Any other suggestions or items needing attention from what you saw in the Belar Advisor info?

Suggestions re the secondary display settings/smitfraud problem I mentioned. Or would it be more appropriate to post a short inquiry under the spyware forum and ask them to refer to this part of the current thread I have going here.
