Hi,
If I reboot, or restart, I get the message "Windows - no disk. Please insert disk
in drive."
I can clear it by hitting cancel, like ten, twenty times, but it is quite annoying.
I followed the instructions in the "start here" post, and removed some spyware
and a p2p downloader, but I still get the same d#mn message.
Here's my hijack--thanks:

Please run hijack this again and post a new log in this thread.

Also,

* Please click this link to download Silent Runners.
* Save it to the desktop.
* Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
* You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done yet, just let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
* Once you receive the prompt "All Done!", double-click on the new text file on the desktop and copy that entire log and paste it here.

*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

My friend had this problem and I worked on her computer forever because it had a number of problems. Let me think what I did. Do you use IE or Firefox? Does it happen when you want to download or just boot up?

I use IE and it only happens when I boot up, or restart. Everything else seems to work ok. The only other symptom is that maybe my system is
a little slower than it used to be.

Does it require you to stick in a floppy to boot up?

no, boot up is fine. I just have to click 'continue' or 'cancel' a few times
and everything is fine. It does seem that some program is telling the computer that it needs a disk to run, so maybe that's the right track.

I just thought of something. I have all sorts of registry errors showing up in Registry First Aid. Would that help?

ARe you running Norton, AVG and McAfee? Is one a firewall? Just keep one anti-viral. Get rid of the others.

There are quite a few programs available that offer protection features to help keep a computer from getting infected. While this is normally a helpful feature, it can keep a victim from making the changes necessary to clean their comptuer. Please read the following and uninstall or disable those that apply to your machine.

These programs need to be uninstalled

AdWatch

These programs can just be disabled

Microsoft Antispyware
TeaTimer
SpySweeper
Win Patrol
Spyware Guard
PSGuard
Pestpatrol
Regrun
Diamonds Process controller

I am only running AVG. I deleted everthing else that I could. It seems
Norton and McAffee don't want to let go and I don't know how to get rid of the junk they left behind. And as far as disabling..spy sweeper, pest patrol, teatimer, etc. I didn't even know I had them, let alone how to disable them. I don't know where they are, sorry. The rest of your instructions, I will do.

Sorry, I have no idea how to disable the teatimer, let alone what is is.
I think it has to do with Spybot, but I can't find how to disable.

It prevents you from fixing your computer. Teatimer is a part of spybot search and destroy maker's offerings.

Go to start>>run and type in msconfig

Go to the start up tab and uncheck the items I asked you to disable and then redo the fix. Microsoft antispyware is still appearing also.

ok, followed directions, still was getting 'no disk' error on boot-up (about the time when APC was loading). So I disabled APC Powerchute battery backup, and it seems like the error is gone. This is all beyond me.
