Hi there. First time posting. Thanks for being there. I have spent what seems like hours pouring over other posts trying to learn from others who have had similar trouble before me.

My trouble has evolved over the last few days. First, upon start up an error message about wininet.dll missing. Many programs wouldn't launch. I updated my various utility programs on my desktop, and ran them from the CD on the lap top. Using task manager I found another wininet.dll, copied it into the right place, and got the internet working, though painfully slowly. Sometimes I get the blank blue screen on start up for a long time. For a while in safe mode it seemed that my laptop wouldn't connect with our wireless network. For the moment I can connect so I will post the logs I have from the last day or so.

I am operating Windows XP Professional. I run adaware, AVG, Spybot regularly. Recently added Ewido Security Suite and Smit Rem. And also HiJack This. So here is what I have.

Any help you can give would be so appreciated.

Hello Coachwife6 -- Thanks for your efforts to help me figure this out. Before I post the logs, an update about the state of the computer. Tried to boot up with not luck. Extremely slow response to even single key strokes. Never did log in successfully. So I rebooted in safe mode, successfully. But no internet access. Go figure.

I was able to run the requested program from a CD, so here first is the hijack this log. And then silent runner.

The only program on your list which was installed on the lap top was WinPatrol, only recently installed when I was getting to know GTG. I have uninstalled it.

I also uninstalled Kaspersky. The only antivirus program I run is AVG. Can't get rid of Symantec. It was from a corp network edition and it seems reluctant to leave. But it has been disabled for a long time.

The weather related files are from a program called weather bug -- links to national weather service. But lots of ads too. So I had HJT fix that. The lowdowns stuff was the old company domain. HJT fixed that.

About Clean Up -- I installed it last week -- again part of my intro to GTG, and when I ran it the first time it cleared more than a gig of file space! This time just a tiny bit.

I looked over your log again and it appears that you are running Norton and Grisoft? Is Norton a firewall? You don't need two antiviral products running.

I saw miekiemoes post this advice to someone and it made me think:

Download http://noahdfear.gee.../click.php?id=1
and save the file to your desktop.
Doubleclick it and choose install. This will create a new folder on
your desktop with the name smitrem.

* Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to
start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

REBOOT Important!! And post the smitfiles.txt log in your next reply.
You'll find smitfiles.txt on your C:

It could be possible, after reboot that your system is using the
windows classic theme again.
To restore this and set it back to XP-theme, rightclick on your desktop
> properties > tab Appearances and choose Windows XP style again under
windows and buttons.
Click apply and OK.

Here is the smitrem log. Interesting that this is where we ended up, because I started with this a while back when I was first investigating the trouble. Maybe you can make more sense of it.

I am not running the SYmantiec/Norton antivirus. I have tried unsuccessfully to uninstall it. It was installed as part of a corporate software installation when the computer was first purchased. No connection any longer with the company, and the uninstall program won't allow me to fully uninstall it. I have adminsitrator rights on the machine, but apparently that isn't enough. Any suggestions?

Also - can you tell me what silent runner does?

Do you have multiple users using your computer?

Yes -- there are several users, each with their own log in and profile in windows 2000. But I am the adminsitrator so I was able to remove the folder from a different user's desktop.
