Hi,

Can you tell me how to remove the junk that the Panda Scan found, along with anything else you might see in my HiJack Log? I'd like to remove the webwasher along with the pestscan.

Thanks so much!

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools (or View)->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders (it's Show all files for Windows 98).
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Make sure you downloaded, installed, updated and ran these programs (run in Safe Mode) already - Ad-aware, Spybot and Ewido (only if you have Windows 2000 or XP). If you didn't, do them now. For more information, go to http://www.greyknigh...com/spyware.htm

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

WebWasher

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WebWasher] C:\Program Files\WebWasher\wwasher.exe
O16 - DPF: axscanner - http://www.pestscan....r/axscanner.cab
O16 - DPF: axscannerruntime - http://www.pestscan....nnerruntime.cab
O16 - DPF: mscomctl - http://www.pestscan....er/mscomctl.cab
O16 - DPF: ppctlcab - http://www.pestscan....er/ppctlcab.cab
O16 - DPF: {9522B3FB-7A2B-4646-8AF6-36E7F593073C} (cpbrkpie Control) - http://a19.g.akamai....23/cpbrkpie.cab

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\WINNT\DOWNLOADED PROGRAM FILES\VBouncerOuter1123030725(1).exe
C:\PROGRAM FILES\Lycos
C:\WINNT\system32\Xcite.exe
C:\Program Files\WebWasher\

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

Greyknight17,

Couple of things:

Ewido-can't seem to download updates. I get a message request failed 403 HTTP/1.0 403 Forbidden. I did go to your link and downloaded update. Do I need to do something (like drag it to a folder?) to apply this update?

Spybot-this seems to be happening each time and on each computer-When I try to download, I get a message "Bad checksum!" Any idea why?

Can I go on with the fixes anyway? I am impatient to start!

Thanks!

For Ewido, just download that file and run it. That should update it for you.

For Spybot, beore you download, select a different download location. I think it has like 8 different locations/servers. So try them all to see which one works for you.

You should be ready now to do the fixes :tazz: Just make sure to run at least Ad-aware and Spybot first. Those will probably take a total of 30 or so minutes. Then go straight to the HijackThis fixes...

Hi again!

After posting yesterday I found the lycos folder and deleted it. When I went around today for the VBouncerOuter in WINNT/downloaded program files, I could not find it. I will do a search again once the scans are done. Any search suggestions? Could it be hidden somewhere? I did find these two files in WINNT/Downloaded Programs files, they both appear to belong to pest patrol. Can I delete these two files, MSVCP 71 & SSVCR 71? Also, FILEMGT.FILEMGT.Ctrl appears as "damaged". Is this something to be concerned about?

By the way, after reading your website should I consider uninstalling Microsoft's Spyware program?

Will post new log when I have completed my checklist.

You may delete all the files you think are suspicious in that Downloaded Program Files folder. If anything, the website you visit will reinstall them back if needed. For that file you can't find, let's make sure it doesn't exist:

Download KillBox http://www.greyknigh...spy/KillBox.exe. Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. Copy the below files and go back to KillBox. Go to File->Paste from Clipboard and then hit the button with a red circle and white X. Confirm to delete and when asked if you want to reboot, say Yes:

C:\WINNT\DOWNLOADED PROGRAM FILES\VBouncerOuter1123030725(1).exe

If you get a PendingOperations message, just close it and restart your computer manually.

Uninstalling Microsoft AntiSpyware is your decision. In the past, we ask users to get it, but ever since Microsoft took out their removal detection for a few big spyware/adware companies, we made a decision to take out their program indefinitely. Some users may have noticed this....some common ones like Claria are set to Ignore instead of the normal remove in the past. So keep it if you want...I won't make that decision for you. But I would remove it.

Hi Greyknight17,

Ran scans & killbox. Panda is picking up one item. Is it something to be concerned about? Should I uninstall Kill box now?

Yep, no need to worry about that registry entry found by Panda...harmless now.

Just delete the KillBox.exe file and delete the submit folder in your c: drive.

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

The system is a little slow at startup, but I think that it has to do with what's in the start up itself. I wanted to clean out this junk out. I know first hand how spyware can drag a system down.

Thanks for your help! You folks are great!!
