Your help is requested.

A week ago I was infected which reset my home page. By loading and running Ad-Aware, Spybot and Microsoft AntiSpyware and then using knowledge from this forum, I haven gotten rid of most of my problems (popcorn72, bndmod.exe, ldomr.dll, etc. etc.) Now I am left with the issue of my Google search results begining redirected. My Hijackthis follows... Thank you for your help.

Hi lagunamike and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

1. If you haven't logged in go to Geeks to Go and do so. Then proceed to item a.

If you already have logged in, go directly to item a.
  • Click on My Controls at the top right hand corner of the window.
  • In the left hand column, click "View Topics"
  • If you click on the title of your post, you will be taken there
2. Also, while at the My Controls page, check the box to the right of your post and then scroll down.
.Where it says "unsubscribe" click the pull-down menu and select "immediate email notification"

3. You are currently posting your log in double space format instead of single space format. Your current format makes analysis of your log very difficult.

To remove the double spacing in your log, please do the following:
  • Please go to Start >> Run... and type notepad.exe
  • Hit OK.
  • Now go to Format and uncheck WordWrap.
  • Close Notepad.

4. Please DELETE your current HJT program from its present location.

5. Download and run the following HijackThis autoinstall program from Here . Please choose the default location of C:\Program Files\ as the destination. HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click SCAN and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')
  • POST the log into this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Regards,

Trevuren

Trevuren,

Thank you for helping me with this problem! It appears that in addition to the Google redirect that the popcorn file continues to replace itself as well as a password logger (microsoft anti-spyware calls it a PWS-pinch). I have installed HijackThis per your instruction and the log follows:

1. I want you to download and run a free trial version of an anti-trojan program called: Trojan Hunter . Let it scan your whole system and remove anything it finds.

REBOOT your system.

2. Please follow the instructions provided, you may want to print out these instructions and use them as a reference.
  • Please download ewido security suite it is a trial version of the program.
    • Install ewido security suite
    • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
    • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
    • The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
    • The program will now go to the main screen
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
    • Click on Start
    • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the updates are installed do the following:
    • REBOOT into Safe Mode
    • Run EWIDO
    • Click on scanner
    • Click on Start Scan
    • Let the program scan the machine
    • While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
    • Click Save report
    • Save the report to your desktop
  • Reboot your machine and post back a new HJT log and the ewido .txt log file you saved by using Add Reply

Trevuren,

As you requested, I installed and ran Trojan Hunter and Ewido. They each found items to remove. The new HJT log and ewido.txt logs follow... Thanks again for your help.

  • Click the Networking tab.
  • Double-Click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item.
  • Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS Servers Automatically.
  • Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.

Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now. In addition, please tell me if there are any more malware problems that you are aware of.

Trevuren,

I had HJT fixed the items you identified. Also, after a reboot I opened the TCP/IP configuration as you requested and the radio button for "obtain DNS server address automatically" was already checked. Following is the new HJT log. After I post this reply, I will check how Google is working as well as see if I can find anything that may indicate a malware problems. I will be back with an update. Thanks.

Trevuren,

I must still have malware hiding some where. After I posted the log a couple of minutes ago, I tried a couple of google searches and was redirected (example searhed on "porshe", clicked on the porshe.com listing and was redirected to automart.com --- I tried it again with searching google for audi, clicked on the audiusa.com listing and was redirected to whypaysticker.com. So, a bunch of bad stuff was removed from my system but, there must be something left. Thanks again for working on this.

Trevuren,

I ran Ad-Aware which just found a few traking cookies. Ewido found a few items and as happened earlier today it had an "error during cleaning" of "TrojanDownloader.Agent.uj". Following are the new HJT and the ewido logs. Thank you for continuing to work this problem.

1. I want you to download and run a free trial version of an anti-trojan program called: Trojan Hunter . Let it scan your whole system and remove anything it finds.

REBOOT your system.

2. Download a trial version of SpySweeper
  • Install the application
  • Update its definitions
  • Run the program
  • Let it remove everything it wants
  • Finally, when it has finished its work, REBOOT your system.
3. Report back on their findings

4. Post a fresh HJT log, please

Tevuren,

The Tojan Hunter found two instances of Demola.100 in the "...\system volume internet \ restore" directory.

SpySweeper then found a trojan horse (Tojan-downloader_ruin and Adware (searchtoolbar) as well as some more tracking cookies it didn't like. More specifically, SpySweeper found 16 traces of Trojan-downloader_ruin in various locations (c:\windows|explorer.exe; HKLM\software\microsoft\current version\urls\ which had 8 substraces; HKLM\software\microsoft\current version\ruins\ which had 5 substraces). The searchtoolbar it didn't like was found in HKU\S-1-5-21-2............|software\searchtoolbar which had 5 subtraces. When SpySweeper went to fix all the problems it stated that it found a known treat running in memory.

After a reboot, SpySweeper opened a window and stated that there was a new program that was starting when Windows starts that was unknown (dmhcx.exe which had no product name, no company name and no copywrite) and that if I didn't know what it was it should be removed. It was found in c:\windows\system32\dmhcx.exe and its "registry or startup folder" was HKLM:Run. I had SpySweeper remove this item. I feel like this is getting us closer to a clean system.

Now the new HTJ follows:

Wanna do 1 more to be sure? I knew you would say yes.

I need you to download MWav to a convenient location.

This scan might take around 3+ hours to finish when set to scan everything.
I need you to run MWav by double-clicking on mwav.exe. This scan only produces a report, it doesn't clean your system. I will analyze the report and recommend a course of action depending on the results.

Put a check next to the below items before scanning:
  • Memory
  • Startup Folders
  • Drive - All Local Drives
  • Folder - then click "browse" to change the directory to C: (default is C:\Windows)
  • Registry
  • System Folders
  • Services
  • Include Sub-Directory
  • Scan All Files
Please make sure ALL of these are checked, then press the Scan button. This typically will take hours to complete.

**NOTE*** Sometimes MWav will pause and it appears to be finished, but it isn't done. Just let it run until it says it's complete.

On the bottom portion of the window, you will see the lower panel where MWav is listing "infected items", please highlight everything in that lower panel and copy them by holding CTRL + C then paste it here. The whole log will be extremely BIG so there is no way to post the log. I just need the infected items list.

Regards,

Trevuren,

An update to my previous reply. It appears that the Google redirect has gone away. Please let me know if you see anything else that is suspect based on the HJT I posted earlier.

Also, if my PC has been cured, I would appreciate your suggestion on which of the malware protection packages I should leave on my PC (as some are on a trial basis). Over the course of this effort, I have installed Ad-Aware that is just set for scanning on demand, Trojan Hunter (Guard is enabled), Spy Sweeper (running all the time now as it seems to have fixed the worst of the problems), Microsoft Anti-Spyware (I loaded it before I posted here), ewido (used on demand) and Norton Internet Security. It may be a misperception, but it seems like my PC is a bit slower with all of this protection software running in the background.

Thank you again!

Treveuren,

Just as I posted my reply I noticed that you sent a request for me to run MWav. I'll do that overnight and send you the results tomorrow. If all is well, then I'll ask for advice on what to leave on my system.

Thank you.
