Hi,

After my last run-in with a worm, I've been running HijackThis weekly. A couple of days ago, I noticed that it had changed, so I thought I better let someone wiser than me take a look at my log file (done in safe mode). I'm running Windows XP SP2 on a laptop. I have Spybot, Lavasoft Ad-Aware, and Spyware Blaster installed. I recently purchased and installed PC Doctor, too, so perhaps the new winlogon notify entries have something to do with that, but somehow, I doubt it.

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have at least one instance of the dreaded Virtumonde (Vundo) infection. There is another infection which looks like Vundo, but I don’t think it is. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

Firstly could you please disable Spyware Doctor from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and double-click on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.

  • At this point press Enter once.

  • Next you will see:

    Type in the file path as instructed by the forum staff
    Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.


  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
    • C:\WINNT\system32\tuvwx.dll

  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.

  • Next you will see:

    Please type in the second file path as instructed by the forum staff
    Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!): C:\WINNT\system32\xwvut.*
  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED: O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00DBDAC8-4691-4797-8E6A-7C6AB89BC441} - C:\WINNT\system32\fcyww.dll
    O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {6DD0BC06-4719-4BA3-BEBC-FBAE6A448152} - C:\WINNT\system32\tuvwx.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: fcyww - C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\fcyww.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: tuvwx - C:\WINNT\system32\tuvwx.dll
  • After you have fixed these items, close HiJackThis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
  • Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programmes menu).
Set the programme up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the programme.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log from normal mode, and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Hi Phil,

First, thanks for helping me; I appreciate it.

I just did a Activescan earlier today (but unfortunately forgot to save the log), and it stated I had Virtumonde and Startpage.AIW if that helps any.

Next, I've just downloaded everything you asked me to, and I'm about to "get busy." But you asked about Admin rights; I'm the only person who uses this or any of my other computers.

Okay, VundoFix didn't like the second line I entered: C:\WINNT\system32\xwvut.* The app said something to the effect of there wasn't such a file, but then it con't to work like you said it would.

When you are dealing woith malware, nothing really surprises me as plenty of crazy things happen. I used to try and analyse "why?" but I gave that up a while ago.

Anyway, it is looking better, just a bit more to do.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Killbox by Option^Explicit

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Hi Phil,

Well this malware I have is crafty evidently. When I went to remove:

from HJT, they'd morphed into:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: mljij - C:\WINNT\system32\mljij.dll

So I went on and tried to delete these new entries (via HJT), but they wouldn't budge. So I went ahead to the Killbox instructions, completed those, did a Clean Up! and the HJT log is below. And after the HJT log is the most recent Activescan log.

Again, thank you for all this help. I'm sorry I'm a difficult case.

Well how wrong was I? In my first fix I said at least one Vundo, the other wasn't quite right in its presentation to be called Vundo, but as you and I have witnessed, it was Vundo all along.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and double-click on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.

  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  • Next you will see:

    Please type in the second file path as instructed by the forum staff
    Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):C:\WINNT\system32\jijlm.*
  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open.

  • After you have fixed these items, close HiJackThis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
  • Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programmes menu).
Set the programme up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the programme.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

When I first did the Activescan and saw the results, I ran Lavasoft Ad-aware and Spy Doctor, then I ran Activescan again with the same results as above. Is there any chance it could be picking that up from the lockdown zones or zone maps in my registry? Anyhow, what should I do now? At least it looks like Virtumonde is gone.

Don't worry about time, I have plenty of it.

Your HJT log is reading clean, but if there is something lurking, Ewido wil find it.

Please download
Ewido Security Suite

Install Ewido Security Suite.
  • Install Ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
    • You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
    (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.

Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

Safe Mode

Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The programme will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
Now that the updates have been installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with Ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop and include it in your reply.
Now close Ewido security suite.

Also, may I ask you if I should keep Ewido on my computer? Will it conflict with Spyware Doctor by PC Tools? Do I continue to use Javacool's Spyware Blaster and Lavasoft's Ad-Aware? I want protection, naturally, but I don't want one application to conflict with another. What's your advice, Phil?

Congratulations! your new log is clean. :tazz: Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated. :)

Ewido is a must have product, but use it as an on demand scanner remembering to update it before using. Just one antispyware programme running in real-time alongside your AV, otherwise you will get slow down and conflicts.

Hi Phil,

I reset then re-enabled my System Restore as you suggested, and I do check for MS updates every couple of days. Since I have SP2 installed, I do have Microsoft's pop-up blocker, and I've got it set on high.

I also have McAfee Virus scanner and Zone Alarm (free edition) not to mention a router. I've been so very careful, and as I said, this is the first time I've been infected with anything in approximately 18 years online (yeah, I was around back in the bulletin board days)!

I have two more questions and a couple of comments before you go, if you have a moment. You said to use Ewido as an on demand scanner. Does that mean I should inactivate the "Realtime protection" since I have PC Tools Spyware Doctor running? Since I need to buy a spyware protector for my desktop, to you prefer Ewido over what I have on my laptop -- Spyware Doctor?

As far as comments, I wanted to say, thank you again for all your help and patience. You're awesome. I also wanted to tell you that I'm also a Meniere's Disease sufferer, too. I have it in one ear -- right. Those vertigo attacks are awful, aren't they?

You are quite correct in your thinking that just one anti spyware programme running in real-time is permissible. If you are considering purchase of software for a new PC, and wished to choose between Ewido and Spyware Doctor, my personal choice would be Ewido, since I have no practical experience with SpyDoc. My PC and home network, is protected by AVG (Alvaro Villa Galvis) antivirus, Microsoft Anti spyware in real-time, with on demand scanners: Ewido, Ad-Aware and Spybot. I use XP built-in firewall and find it is sufficient. I only use Firefox for browsing.

Hi Phil,

Once again, thanks for all your help; I do appreciate it immensely.

My ear doc has never suggested the Gentamycin injections; instead, he has me take Neptazane tabs (50 mg). It keeps pressure from building up (used mainly for glaucoma patients). It's been a real life-saver as I've only had one mild attack since the onset of the Meniere's.

The article you linked me to (re: Spyware Doc) is interesting, considering the gave it an Editor's Choice award in mid-June 2005! PCMag Spware Doctor Opinions change quickly, LOL!

Anyhow, I've already purchased it for my laptop, but I'll read more about Ewido and maybe put that on my desktop.
