Windows XP 64 needed for Athlon64...?

The basic answer is no, the Athlon 64 processor is fully backwards compatible. However you won't gain the full advantage of the processor running a 32-bit OS.

Some things to note about XP-64 are 1) that it will not run 16-bit applications, and 2) you need 64-bit drivers.

Personally I have found it to be more stable than 32-bit XP and have not had driver issues but you should investigate driver support for devices you wish to attach before purchasing the OS (if it was intrinsically supported in XP, so it will be in XP-64).

The best course of action at this time is, IMO, to wait for Windows Vista which will have finetuned this new technology and of course comes as standard.

Yea ... it sucks .. so right now amd even though is better than intel right now can't use it's full potiental yet ='(
