Try em both on the far left jumper to make em both Cable Select and try booting up again. Make sure the ide cable is plugged firmly into each cd/dvd drive and into the motherboard itself. Then reboot.

I'm thinking the IDE cable you are using may be bad. Unplug the cable from the CD-rom and plug the same connector that was attached to it into the DVD-ROM drive and see if the DVD-ROM drive shows up.

Ok, now I'm really sure it's the CD....... :tazz:

I tried every possibility (jumpering), connectors, etc. and no luck whatsoever. The DVD shows up and works fine, but the CD is nowhere to be found.

And now.... :) I pushed one of the connectors so hard, that it broke 2 pins at the back of the CD. It still opens and closes when I reboot, but doesn't show up. At least I was able to back up my files yesterday!

Tomorrow I will bring the pc's original CD-ROM (which I recall never worked too well and that's why we changed it in the first place) and install it for the time being. I will see if it works and post the result.

And on Monday..... I will start looking for a new machine.... hopefully finding a nice, fine Mac. Going back to my origins! :woot:

If anyone still has any ideas.... I will appreciate them. Thanks everyone for the help, support and patience!

if you had problems with the old cd rom...and it was the same IDE cable...i would be inclined to believe that it's the cable...or the controller..if you were already trying to find a new machine before this stuff happened...thats great...but i wouldn't give up on this one....it's always good to have more than one machine around..
