i hope i am in the right place for this question. i should start by saying my computer knowledge is that of a 3 year old...so any any replies should be given to me in the simplest terms please...and thanks in advance.
i was wondering how long a typical avast! scan should take. i downloaded avast!yesterday and ran a scan and it took almost 2 hours. i had it scan everything it could possibly scan.
anyway, is thisa normal amount of time? i know that i have some spyware/adware problems among other things and have been using ad-aware and spybot which has seemed to help. those scans dont seem to take near as long though.
anyway, is this normal or could there be a bigger issue? thanks!

Different scanners scan the PCs is different ways and also look for different things. Some scanners only look at the registry and other will do a deep scan of all the files. Therefore the amount of time taken to complete a scan would vary from scanner to scanner.

e.g. Spybot would take a few minutes to complete the scan and Adawrae would take much longer.

Avast taking 2 hours doesnt seem to be too out of the way.

Of course, how efficient your file organization is also makes an impact on the scan time. If your hard disk is completely defragmented, then the scan would be faster. De-fragmentation is the opposite of fragmentation ie. when the files on your hard disk are scattered all over the hard disk instead of being in contiguous sectors.

In case you have spyware / adware issues, then please go to this page and follow instructions in Step5 to download and run Hijack This. Post a log and I will look at it.
