I was looking for help with mlljk.dll, which Trend Micro identifies as TROJ_CRYPT.N. In looking through the other posts, I also have the WinFixer problem, which might be related to this. Since nothing seemed to work on WinFixer for the other posts, I went straight to generating the Hijack log.

I did have to turn off real time virus scanning in Trend Micro so I could actually do something on the computer.

Hijack log posted below

It sounds like this problem has been solved multiple times, but it doesn't look like the solutions are always identical, so thought I'd post the problem just to be safe.

Thanks!

Michael

Trevuren:

Thanks for the quick response! Although the instructions seem very straightforward, things did not flow for me as described. I believe I was able to accomplish the intent for as far as I got though, but eventually I couldn't go any further.

A. Gets to Go / My Controls / View topics -- the last part of this didn't work. The only View Topics was under the Subscriptions category. After reworking these several times and going into other areas it worked for a bit after I found my issue by searching the forum for my user name. Coming back into this again after trying safe mode, etc., it didn't work -- I get no topics in my area.

B. check box on right of post, etc. -- there wasn't a box to check. I did get into an email settings area under Options in the left hand panel. It indicated that I had immediate email notification selected -- but I wasn't notified of your message

C. Download VundoFix. exe. Was able to do this. Folder is saved on the desktop but it isn't visible -- can find it by searching. Also not listed in the Windows Explore area as a folder, but I can get to it using the cd commands in command mode.

D. Was able to get into the area to select Safe mode. I tried both Safe Mode and Safe Mode with command prompt. For the first one, it just settled into a screen with safe mode in the four corners and black everywhere else. Couldn't do anything, so hard booted and selected Safe Mode with command prompt. Got a command prompt window, but it wouldn't select any commands. Rebooted again into the normal default mode to send this message to you.

I have to disable real-time scanning in Trend Micro to get anywhere -- keeps giving me pages of warning messages over and over again about the virus.

Please let me know where I went astray ... I'm not seeing where I'm not following the directions.

Thanks!

We are experiencing server problems tonight.

Try booting into Safe Mode this way:

To use the System Configuration Utility to start Windows XP in Safe mode
  • Close all open programs.
  • Click Start > Run.
  • In the Run dialog box, type msconfig and then click OK.
  • In the System Configuration Utility, on the BOOT.INI tab, check /SAFEBOOT.
  • Click OK.
  • When you are asked to restart the computer, click Restart
  • The computer restarts in Safe mode. (This can take several minutes.)
When you are finished working in Safe mode, use the System Configuration Utility to start Windows XP in normal mode.

To use the System Configuration Utility to start Windows XP in normal mode
  • Finish what you need to do in Safe mode.
  • In the section "To use the System Configuration Utility to start Windows XP" above, repeat steps 1-3 (inclusively).
  • But in step 4, uncheck /SAFEBOOT.
  • Close all programs, and restart the computer.

Still had a lot of problems where what I saw and what I was supposed to see at each step was considerably different. Was able to get things to work (I think anyway) although I got a fatal system error instead of the blue screen of death at the end and I ended up having to power down the computer. Here are the HiJackThis log results, the vundofix.tx file and an attempt to cut and paste the ActiveScan results (didn't find anything)

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
  • First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:
    • Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
    • Choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
    • Uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
    • Close the window with ok
  • Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = about:blank
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = about:blank
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdwareAlert] C:\Program Files\AdwareAlert\AdwareAlert.Exe -boot
    O8 - Extra context menu item: &Viewpoint Search - res://C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\ViewBar.dll/CXTSEARCH.HTML

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
    • Press Enter.
  • Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if they are present):

    C:\Program Files\AdwareAlert<==Folder
    C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\ViewBar.dll/CXTSEARCH.HTML

  • Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now.
Regards,

Trevuren

This one went much smoother -- we must be getting close (if not there already). Here is the log. By the way, I can't believe how quickly you are responding -- thanks so much for your time!

Your log looks good. If you have no more malware-related problems that you are aware of, just give me the OK and we can start the final but essential cleanup procedures.

The only thing I noticed is that PC -cillin found the same virus that started this sega last night, but with a different file name. It gave me a message that it was able to quarantine the file. Haven't noticed anything since then.

I really appreciate all the help -- and the very prompt responses!

What's next?

1. Please download the 30-day free trial of Kaspersky antivirus

. Install the program
. Run the definition update module.
. Scan your whole system and let the program remove anything it wants.

2. When finished, REBOOT your system

3. Please post any report/log generated.

It's very late, but you have been so quick to respond I felt I needed to complete these last steps. Unfortunately, the software you had me download seems to have a strong case of "doesn't play well with others". It locked up my machine and trying to do things to regain control results in dialog boxes appearing where they shouldn't be and others kinds of strange behavior. Hard booted the machine and still haven't regained control. You might think about using something else. Whenever my machine does become "mine" again, this stuff is getting deleted immediately!

Fortunately, I was able to update you from another computer.

Thanks so much for all your help and quick responses -- this step seems to be a complete bust though. Hopefully I'll regain control again by morning.

Thanks!

The addition of Kaspersky should not be causing that many problems unless it is finding the things we have been looking for and trying very hard to remove them.

Went downstairs to check ... still locked up. Went into safe mode and removed the program ... it deleted a lot of stuff, including something it called NTFS streams that took quite a bit of time to complete. Once machine rebooted, works normal again.

Turning in now. You must be a nightowl! Don't know what the issues were. Maybe the automated Trend Micro scans were starting about the same time and conflicted with what this program was supposed to do. Whatever the cause, I was really sweating that one!

Thanks!

It could have been the conflicting AVs. Probably was. On the other hand, you may want to read this article on ADS, specially the part that refers to Virus Scanners.

Yes, I am a bit of a nightowl

I tried again -- very slow response but I worked on our other computers and let it go. Noticed in Task Manager that it would very between responding and not responding. Turned off Trend Micro real time scan and that seemed to clear things up. Looks like this program turns on real time scanning by default.

Not sure how to get you a report -- didn't see an option to print. Said it found 6 things, but some of them were quarantined files by Trend Micro.

Article you sent was interesting. Looks like this program uses that concept too, but not sure how much storage it is taking up.

What now?

Thanks again for all the help
