I have for several days now been trying to rid myself of a program I believe is causing me major headaches.. the program.. is winfixer 2005. Though I don't believe the program has been loaded onto my computer,I keep geting the pop-up to install winfixer 2005. . I keep stopping the program before it completly loads on my computer but since this program appeared my problem started. IE6 keeps shutting down and if I try to open multiple windows in IE6 it always will shut down.. I had Firefox 1.07 AND was able to get by but a few days ago Firefox simply quit opening a website up.. I had to uninstall then load firefox beta verison 1.5 tonight and thats why I am able to post here now( my IE6 always shut down because a second window opened on this site). I have followed the steps.. I have scanned my computer with adaware, spybot S&D, spyware doctor. I have scanned with Ewido Security Suite and Trojan Hunter as well. I have Windows XP and SP1 is installed. My hijack this file is pasted below . Thanks in advance for any help in this matter. I am not by any means a computer expert so use kids gloves when giving me any instructions.. thanks!!!

HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

• Run HijackThis
  
• Click SCAN and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')
  
• POST the log into this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

• Unzip and run the program.
  
• You will be presented with a screen where you will find the following option:Restore Microsoft Original Hosts.
• Press it and Close the program.
  
• Reboot your system.

2. Produce and post a fresh HJT log with any comments as to any improvement in your situation.

Hello. I downloaded and ran the program hoster and the rebooted.. My problem with IE still exists.. though I was able to open a few windows before it shut down.. though if IE6 didn't shut down right away with multiple windows open IEPLORE.EXE used all my resources and it showed 100% resources used in windows task manager.. my new Hijackthis log is below.. thanks again for all your help so far also..

1. Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please REBOOT your computer into Safe Mode.
  
  You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  
  
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.

• Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
• Set the program up as follows:
• Click "Options..."
• Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
• Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

[*]Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

Hello.
I just took IE6 for a spin and it appears my problem has been solved when first opening IE6 no pop-ups to try and install winfixer and I was able to open multiple IE6 windows without problem... thanks a bunch!!.
A few questions.. do I need to do anything to get rid of the adware and spyware that activescan showed on my system?? and should I install SP2 on my system?? and in your opinion is firefox a safer bet then IE??? once again thanks for all your help its been truley appreciated..

• Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.

  • "Delete on Reboot".
  • "End Explorer Shell While Killing File"
• Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C

• Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

Hello.
Killbox.exe instructions have been followed.. My computer appears to be malware free.. as best I can tell. IE6 doesn't shut down when opening multiple windows and so far no pop ups to load winfixer..

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Reconfigure Windows XP to hide hidden files:

• Click Start. Open My Computer.
• Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
  
• Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
• Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
• Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

2. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE

• Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
• Left click on "System Restore Tab"
• Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
• Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE

• Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
• Click on "Apply"

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

To protect yourself further:

• Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
