Hi Guys, When I log in, IE tries to open and gives me some type of error that it could not complete the program. Something is trying to open it and it fails. I use Firefox, so I guess its being hijacked ([bleep]s). Here is my log, thanks in advance for any help...

Hi saigontiger,

I can't see much in your log which may cause that. Is there any code in the error message?

Let's run a couple diagnostic programs and see if anything is hiding in the background.

1) Download http://www.bleepingc...es/winpfind.php

Extract WinPFind.zip to your c:\ folder.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Then open c:\WinPFind and double-click on WinPFind.exe. When the program is open, click on the Start Scan button to scart scanning your computer. Be patient as this scan may take a while. When it is done, it will show a log and tell you the scan is completed. Reboot your computer back to normal mode and and post the contents of c:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt as a reply to this topic.

2) Please download Rootkit Revealer (link is at the very bottom of the page)
  • Unzip it to your desktop.
  • Open the rootkitrevealer folder and double-click rootkitrevealer.exe
  • Click the Scan button (bottom right)
  • It may take a while to scan (don't do anything while it's running)
  • When it's done, go up to File > Save. Choose to save it to your desktop.
  • Open rootkitrevealer.txt on your desktop and copy the entire contents and paste them here

WinPFind log looks clean..

Instead of Rootkitrevealer let's try Blacklight

Download F-Secure Blacklight (blbeta.exe) to your desktop.
- Double click on blbeta.exe to run the program. Accept the user agreement.
- Leave "Scan through windows explorer" checked.
- Click Scan.
After the scan finishes, click on Next, then Exit.

BlackLight will create a log on your desktop with the name "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log". Please post that log.

Also please do this: Reboot so that you get the same error again.

Then immediately go to:

Start>All Programs>Administrative Tools>Event Viewer

There are 3 logs there. Look for recent errors/warnings in all logs. You can double click on an entry for more information. See if any info there..then post it here..

Hi: Ran that program, no problems, i will post below. Today, I did not get the Explorer error. I usually use Firefox and on Monday that error came up, but not today or yesterday. This is on my work computer, which is a PC. I have a Mac @ home and never have to do all this crap, scan with 10 different programs constantly, slowing down this m/c with all the updates and load time. Can you tell me why everone does not dump MS OS in mass for Macintosh? No virus, no adware, no trojans, no hassles. I hate Pee Cee's...

Anyway, thanks for letting me rant.
Log below, clean...

Yep, clean.. :)

When Apple starts to make computers as cheap as PC's then it may start to gain some market share. Until then people will keep on sticking to PC's I'm afraid. :tazz:

What you're saying makes me inclined to say it was a temporary problem since all scans are coming clean..

However, check those Event Viewer logs for the approximate time of that error, that Monday morning and see if we can get something substantial from there..

Here is the info from Mondaymorning on IE. I don't use it, so I am not sure why its trying to start. Also, this computer takes forever to start. I realize its only got 256mb ram, however, do I have too many security programs now doing all this? Will adding ram help that?

Also, I am having problems shutting down and I am pasting something below this regarding that. seem sthere are conflicts. what can i do to make this thing turn off when i want.

thanks in advance 4 your help...

Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x35f750f4.

Well this is an error in Windows Explorer, not Internet Explorer and since it says faulting module unknown not much help there..
Since you haven't encountered that error again ever since, it probably was something temporary..

The shutdown issue could be caused by a number of services/applications but let me tell you, Norton Antivirus is a well known culprit on that.

Adding ram would certainly help on performance, including the startup time. Meanwhile, you have several unecessary programs on startup and if you wish to disable any of them that may also help..here is a list I gathered from your HijackThis log..you can safely disable any of them if you like with the instructions next to them..you don't need HijackThis for the items on this list since all of them can be disabled externally..

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common
Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" osboot
Application Scheduler installed along with RealOne Player. Once installed, it runs independently of RealOne Player. On many PCs realsched slows down boot-ups unacceptably, using up to 90% of CPU time at times. To disable "tkbellexe" (1) Start RealOne Player (2) Tools -> Preferences (3) Automatic services in the Categories pane (4) Uncheck all options and then OK
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_04\bin\jusched.exe
Sun Java Runtime Update Scheduler.Disable this task as follows : double-click on the Java plug-in icon in the Control Panel, go to the Update tab and uncheck “Check for updates automatically”, click APPLY - this will disable JUSCHED from starting at boot-up. If you want to update Sun Java at a later stage, simply go back to the same Java plugin icon in the Control Panel, to the “Update” tab, and click the Update Now button.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime Apple’s QuickTime Tray Icon which enables you to start QuickTime from the System Tray (from version 5 onward). Given the extremely simple functionality of this Tray icon, it is a totally unreasonable resource hog - it has been measured to use as much as 1.5Mb of memory at times. To disable it - Start QuickTime through "Start \ Programs", choose the "Edit \ Preferences" menu option, select "QuickTime Preferences" from the right-hand side menu, uncheck the box next to QuickTime System Tray icon. In version 6, however, this is done differently : double-click on the QuickTime icon in the Control Panel to bring up the QuickTime Settings panel, choose Browser Plug-in in the drop-down at the top, and then uncheck QuickTime System Tray icon. You can always start QuickTime through "Start Programs" or through double-clicking on a quicktime file.
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
Windows Messenger service. See this page:
http://www.microsoft...topspamv45.mspx
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\System32\ctfmon.exe
CTFMon is involved with the language/alternative input services in Office XP. CTFMON.exe will continue to put itself back into MSConfig when you run the Office XP apps as long as the Text Services and Speech applets in the Control Panel are enabled. Not required if you don't need these features. For more info on ctfmon see here. CTFMON can be disabled from Control Panel, Text & Speech Services

Hope this helps..

I tried to change the start-up stuff you listed & most of it was changed already, so I rebooted and I am pasting a new log below. Real was already unchecked as was Quicktime, so why do they appear to be back there if they are not checked to auto load in the program??

Also, I took the Java out of the start-up tray, since it was already unchecked. Is that advisable?

Pls. advise and thanks...

Hope this helps..

Problems I am having:
1. Real is already unchecked, yet it appears again in new Hijack this log
2. Java is unchecked, yet shows up again
3. Quicktime is unchecked, yet it appears again
4. MSMSGS.exe, I have no freaking idea what I am doing, it won't work for me on XP, can you explain a little more how to fix?
5. CTFMON.exe, again, no freaking idea, not sure what the heck I am doing, so can you shine a little more light?
thanks in advance...

Firstly, ctfmon.exe, I checked the Microsoft article, it says it uses very little system resources and the disabling is a PITA, so let's leave that one alone..

I forgot that you had teatimer running, it is putting those keys back, we will have to disable teatimer.
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the "Tools" menu.
  • Click "Resident".
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.
Then open HijackThis and click Scan. Put a check next to these:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common
Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" osboot
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_04\bin\jusched.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background

Close all other windows except HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Go to Start > Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the below service:

Messenger

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, under the General tab click the Stop button, then click the drop-down box to change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok.

After that, reboot. Next, reactivate teatimer. If it displays any messages, allow the changes. In some cases teatimer will still put those back, and then what to do is uninstall Spybot, delete the Spybot folder from C:\Program Files, do what you want to do and then reinstall Spybot, but we'll see to that if need be.

After doing the above post a new log and let's see if they are gone.

Hi: Thanks for all your help. I was sick for a few days and busy @ work. Did all you said & just downloaded spybot and re-installed it. Seems that freaking real update is still there, even after I deleted it several times. New log pasted below. Anything else you can suggest? Still takes forever to load...
