When I switches the computer on it starts up for a few seconds and then just switches off again. Some times it will stay on for a while. but I have nothing on the screen at all.

Please advise

Sure sounds like a bad power supply. You can't really test it yourself, you'll have to bring it to a local computer shop, or try a replacement. Unfortunately most HP use proprietary power supplies that can get quite expensive ($50-$100+).
