Hi everyone,
Thanks in advance for any help you are able to give.
The problem started this afternoon, when the winfixer popup appeared, telling me my computer may start to run slowly and do erratic things.
I closed all windows (leaving the popup where it was) and ran Norton and Adaware. They found nothing. I then searched the web and tried to fix the problem myself by adapting solutions for other peoples computers. Incidentally, it was hard to access any website with 'Winfixer' in the title, except there own website. I can no only access the web by using the icon in the Internet Explorer folder, right clicking it and clicking 'Run As', with the 'Protect my computer.....' box checked.
Everything is now running very slowly and the contents of 'My Favorites' folder have disappeared. However Yahoo and MSN Messengers appear not to have been affected.
I doubt that I will be able to download anything, as I visited, as instructed, your 'Click Here before posting a Hijack This Log' page. I was unable to download anything from there.
I alrerady have the Highjack This and VundoFix programs. Here is a copy of the Highjack This log:

Further to the problems listed above....I can no longer access my email (MSN Hotmail) and the Internet Explorer icon in the toolbar has changed to what looks like a yellow telephone..... :tazz: please!!

I was not entirely accurate with one of the details in my original post....the favorites folder is still there...but it doesn't show when I click the favorites 'star'...the 'history' icon doesn't work either.

My apologies for replying to my own topic...I realise now that I should have edited the original post instead.

Unfortunately, since you already have the tool, your log shows no signs of Vundo. Actually, your log shows no signs of anything malicious.

I would disable Peer Guardian and see if that helps your connection.
I'm guessing that the yellow telephone is not your IE icon, but in fact related to Skype.

Let's take a look a more detailed log and see if anything else shows up. It's a very small download.

Download WindPFind

Extract WinPFind.zip to your c:\ folder.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
* if you have trouble getting into Safe mode go here for more info.

Then open c:\WinPFind and double-click on WinPFind.exe.
When the program is open, click on the Start Scan button to start scanning your computer. Be patient as this scan may take a while.
When it is done, it will show a log and tell you the scan is completed. Reboot your computer back to normal mode and and post the contents of c:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt as a reply to this topic.

Sam,
I disabled Peer Guardian and uninstalled both Skype and vSkype with Add/Remove programs. However the yellow telephone is still there. I can't download WindPFind. In fact I am unable to download anything. Is there anything else I can do?

I've attached WinPFind to this post. Can you download it from here?

I still can't download WinPFind, Sam. I've been trying to find out why I can't download anything and in Tools/Internet Options/Security/Custom Level, everything is set to 'Disable'. I cannot reset to 'Medium'. Also, all Cookies are blocked. This won't reset either.

Let's see what we can do with what you already have.

Open Hijackthis, click "Open the Misc Tools section"
Next to "Generate StartupList log", place a check next to "List also minor sections" (full) and "List empty sections (complete).
Then click "Generate StartupList log"
Click "Yes" to the box that pops-up.
Then copy and paste the notepad text that appears to this topic.

I don't see any issues in that log.

Do you have your Windows CD?

I'm afraid I no longer have my Windows CD Sam.

I have seen SOUNDMAN.exe in Processes in my Windows Task Manager. I found the following on the 'Sophos' website. Is mine Ok or is it this W32/Agobot-JS worm?

W32/Agobot-JS is a worm that spreads to remote shares with weak passwords.
The worm copies itself as soundman.exe to the Windows system folder
To run on startup the worm installs itself as a service called soundman and sets the following registry entries:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\soundman
= soundman.exe
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices\soundman
= soundman.exe
The Trojan attempts to terminate and disable various anti-virus and security-related programs and modifies the HOSTS file located at <WINDOWS>\System32\Drivers\etc\HOSTS, mapping selected anti-virus websites to the loopback address 127.0.0.1 in an attempt to prevent access to these sites. Typically the following mappings will be appended to the HOSTS file:
127.0.0.1 www.grisoft.com
127.0.0.1 www.trendmicro.com

Soundman.exe also refers to this.

System Tray icon for the Realtek AC97 Audio Sound Manager for AC97 onboard audio. Available via Start -> Settings-> Control Panel

And you have no signs that your hosts file has been altered. They would show up in the hijackthis log.

Without the CD and your inability to download any other programs, we are very limited in what we can do.

Try this...

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x Repair for Windows XP[/b]
  • From the Start menu, select Search, select All Files and Folders.
  • Select More Advanced Options and place a checkmark beside Search Hidden Files and Folders option.
  • Ensure that Search System Folders and Search Subfolders are also checked.
  • In the All or Part of the File Name box, type ie.inf
  • In the Look In drop-down menu, select C: or the letter of the hard drive that contains the Windows folder.
  • Click the Search button.
  • In the search results pane, find the ie.inf file located in Windows\Inf folder.
  • Right click the ie.inf file and click Install on the context menu.
  • Reboot the computer when the file copy process is complete.
Let me know how it goes.

Can you get to this site?

I'm sorry Sam, I still can't download anything. The Security tab in Internet Options will not reset.

Also I should have my Windows Installation Disk tomorrow. (As long as my son can find it)

I've been trying to find out why I can't download anything and in Tools/Internet Options/Security/Custom Level, everything is set to 'Disable'. I cannot reset to 'Medium'. Also, all Cookies are blocked. This won't reset either.

When you are at Internet Options -> Security tab is anything grayed out?
Can you click in Default Level?
