Sorry to bother you great people again. My kids have been going on this new site called My Space and they have picked up another virus. A message from Norton AntiVirus says High Risk Virus Alert.

I went to norton and folowed instructions for fix vundo and ran it twice. It says it can not find the virus.

Hi Angie, sorry for the delay .

You have the Vundo infection. I also notice you have the eBlaster email records and key logger software installed. Did you intentionally install this product? Further information can be found here. First we will tackle the Vundo infection and if you did not install eBlaster, we will tackle that later.

Please follow my instructions carefully and we should have you back to normal soon. The fix may take several iterations, so don't be worried if your symptoms are not fixed first time.

Please print these instructions (or save them in Notepad) as you will not have access to the internet during certain parts of the fix

Preparation

You are running Norton AntiVirus Script Blocking and that will interfere with out fix. We will disable it and then re-enable it after you are clean.

To disable Norton AntiVirus Script Blocking :

• Start Norton AntiVirus. If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton SystemWorks or Norton Internet Security, then start that program.
• Click Options.
• If you see a menu, click Norton AntiVirus.
• In the left pane, click Script Blocking.
• In the right pane, uncheck Enable Script Blocking (recommended).
• Click OK

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.

Download and install CleanUp!

To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:

• Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
• Double-click on the My Computer icon.
• Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
• After the new window appears select the View tab.
• Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
• Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
• Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
• Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
• Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.

The Fix

• Please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning.

• After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
• Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
• Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Okay,Yes I did intentionally install the eBlaster to keep track of my teenagers online activities.

I downloaded VundoFix, and downloaded and installed CleanUp.

When I went into safe mode it gave me 2 options.
Windows(default)
Windows XP Home Edition

When I click on (default) it says:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please reinstall a cop of the above file.

When I click on Home Edition it lets me log on in safe mode then the screen goes black with safe mode in all 4 corners. the top center says:
Microsoft®WindowsXP®(build 2600.xpsp-sp2-gdr.05031-1519:service pack 2)

It will not do anything else. PLEASE HELP

Hi Angie

Sometimes in safe mode, your screen resolution changes down to 800x600 or even 640x480. This means you cannot see your icons properly on your desktop. Also sometimes it takes quite a while (several minutes) for the safe mode desktop to appear properly. The 'Safe Mode' text in each corner and the version info at the top is quite normal .

I think the 2nd option on your boot choice menu (Windows XP Home) is the correct option to choose. Can you try it again and give it several minutes to load the desktop etc. See if you can see anything on the desktop, any icons or task bar for example. It is possible for malware to stop safe mode displaying properly, but it could also be related to corrupt Windows files and other reasons.

If you still cannot see anything other than a black screen, try holding down the CTRL-ALT-DELETE keys to access the Task Manager. The easiest wasy to do this is to hold down the Left Ctrl and Left Alt keys together and whilst keeping them held down, press the Delete key usually located beneath the Insert key. You can then start new tasks (such as applications) by clicking on File->New Task and entering the name.

It should be possible to follow the instructions in my last post using this method and whenever you have to launch a program (such as Vundofix or CleanUp), use the Task Manager to start a New Task. For example, to start the Vundofix you would press CTRL-ALT-DELETE, click on File->New Task, click Browse and navigate to the Vundofix folder on your desktop and select the Killvundo.bat file. Then click Open then Ok to launch this program.

Please try the above and let me know how you get on

If the above fails and you can't even start Task Manager to run any tasks, please follow my instructions in Normal Mode and let me know the results.

I think you have given me your old HijackThis log . If you check the date & time on it, it's the same as a previous log. The vundofix text file looks good, but I really need a fresh HijackThis log to look at.

Please can you boot into Normal Mode, run HijackThis and do a scan. Then post the new log file in your next reply.

Hopefully the log will prove that Vundo has gone

To re-enable Norton AntiVirus Script Blocking :

• Start Norton AntiVirus. If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton SystemWorks or Norton Internet Security, then start that program.
• Click Options.
• If you see a menu, click Norton AntiVirus.
• In the left pane, click Script Blocking.
• In the right pane, check Enable Script Blocking (recommended).
• Click OK

To disable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:

• Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
• Double-click on the My Computer icon.
• Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
• After the new window appears select the View tab.
• Uncheck the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
• Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Do not show hidden files and folders.
• Check the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
• Check the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
• Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.

Since your issues have been addressed and you are ready to travel the net again, I will just give you a few ideas on how to stay safe out there. Best of all these programs are all readily available on the net for free

To reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster and SpyWareGuard.

SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard are by JavaCool and both are free programs. SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed and consumes no system resources. SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Antiviruses play an important role in keeping your computer safe and worry free while using the net. *NOTE* Only one antivirus must be allowed to run on your computer, as having two or more running can and will cause conflicts.

There are different browsers available on the net, other than Internet Explorer, we believe!! these are better for security purposes :

You must stay on top of your updates at all times, for the above mentioned applications.

It is vitally important to stay on top of your critical updates provided by microsoft.

This can be accessed by going to Windows Updates and following the prompts.

To add to the performance of your computer, i suggest a weekly maintenance program. Run this tool. Ccleaner

Lastly a second opinion on the Antivirus that you have chosen. I suggest running these online virus scans periodically, just to make sure that the av is doing a proper job, of keeping you safe :

Checking for updates with these products is perfectly safe. What version of Norton Internet Security are you using? Do you only get 2 options when this popup appears? Normally there is an option to 'always allow' - if it exists I would select that. If not can you tell me what the 'configure manually' option presents you with?
