Hi! My name is Dave and I am new to this site. I had Norton Internet Security 2004 installed and it detected a vrius in object c:\windows\system32\ddabb.dll. The Norton program was unable to repair this file -- stated acess to this file denied. I followed the instructions for this Trojan on the Symantec web site which included executing a tool they called FixVundo which did not fix the problem -- in fact it said no virus found. Then suddenly the Norton Antivrus program would no longer launch so their web site instructions said to remove their antivirus program, Norton Internet Security 2004, and re-install. I removed the program per their instructions but unfortunately their instructions did not say how to reinstall the removed program if you had purchased it and downloaded from their website --- GREAT! I sent them an e-mail regarding this and now I have to wait to call them on Monday during business hours for instructions on how to reinstall. In the meantime, I installed a trial version of their antivirus, Norton Antivirus 2005, and as soon as it was launched it alerted me to this Trojan.Vundo virus. I sent Norton Tech team an e-mail but didn't receive a timely response so I did a google and found your web site.

I completed all the tasks in your guide for malware and I had already had Service Pack 2 installed. I am posting the Ewido generated report as well as the Hijack This Log per your instructions. The only problem I noticed after completing all the tasks and rebooting is Norton Antivirus 2005 says I am stlill infected with this virus and posts this medium sized non deleteable window stating this fact (???).

Thanks for your help --- I do appreciate it.....Dave

Hi Dave and welcome to GTG.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Please download VundoFix.exe at http://www.atribune....ds/VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

* Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files.
* After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key (or F5 in some machines) until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
* Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
* Please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddabb.dll

* Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
* When asked for a second path, enter -> C:\WINDOWS\system32\bbadd.*
* Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
* The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
* In HijackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {6DD0BC06-4719-4BA3-BEBC-FBAE6A448152} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddabb.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SNP Generic Host Process] C:\WINDOWS\system\svchost.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [GNP Generic Host Process] C:\WINNT\system\svchost.exe
O16 - DPF: {E9790C6C-DCAA-4E4F-8048-FFEC3B62DFED} (VOGWeb2 Class) - http://67.18.204.35/...ex/vogweb29.cab
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ddabb - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddabb.dll
O23 - Service: CWShredder Service - Unknown owner - C:\Documents and Settings\David Tucker\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\I2QXDXCQ\cwshredder[1].exe (file missing)

Delete this file:

C:\WINDOWS\system\svchost.exe - make SURE you are deleting it from the SYSTEM folder and NOT the SYSTEM32 folder

* After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
* Pressing any key will cause a 'Blue Screen of Death' this is normal, do not worry!
* Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Download and install CleanUp! http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click 'Options...'
Move the arrow down to 'Custom CleanUp!'
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

* Empty Recycle Bins
* Delete Cookies
* Delete Prefetch files
* Cleanup! All Users

Click OK. Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run an online virus scan at ActiveScan http://www.pandasoft.../activescan.htm

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HijackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

QUestion/Problem: I executed KillVundo.bat, HijackThis opened on the main menu -- I did not see a place to check the following items you listed nor did I see a FIX CHECKED to click on --- just the MAIN menu for HijackThis so I clicked on start HijackThis and a blank screen opened, I exited HijackThis and it dropped me back into the KillVundo bat which said to press enter to reboot which I did -- what happened? Did I do something wrong? Let me know --- sorry ---- Dave

Hi Dave, try not to include my reply (making this post too big). Just hit the ADDREPLY or FASTREPLY buttons on the very bottom of the topic instead.

Did you run a scan? You have to run a new HijackThis scan first to get the entries shown. Then check all those I mentioned. When ready, hit Fix Checked button...

Do you have any recommendations on what I should actually be running for software to prevent this from happening again? I do have the following installed --Lavasoft Ad-aware, Norton Internet Security with antispam which I just renewed on August 1 -- NOT happy with them since they could not help me out of this mess, and I have CounterSpy. Let me know --- thanks....Dave

Hi Dave, just to let you know, I'm sure other antivirus programs will not provide that much protection against the world of spyware we live in today :tazz: But I never liked Norton either...

I recommend switching if you don't like it either. So get Grisoft AVG (antivirus) and ZoneAlarm (firewall) instead. Both are free for personal use and I like them more than Norton :)

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.
