Have been reading up on Trojan.Vundo for two days. The procedure seems about the same for everyone, but I know just enough to be really dangerous, so am submitting my HJT log for some assistance.

I have Norton, Spyware Doctor, S&D, even tried SpySweeper's freebie, nothing works. I would really appreciate your assistance, as I need to get back to work, and my computer is my livelihood. Thanks in advance.

Here's my log:

Welcome to GTG.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Please download VundoFix.exe at http://www.atribune....ds/VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

* Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files.
* After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key (or F5 in some machines) until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
* Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
* Please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\rqrsr.dll

* Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
* When asked for a second path, enter -> C:\WINDOWS\system32\rsrqr.*
* Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
* The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
* In HijackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {6DD0BC06-4719-4BA3-BEBC-FBAE6A448152} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\rqrsr.dll
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe
O16 - DPF: {7FE26BE2-B923-4B41-9834-E84DA1CC1F96} (Maid Control) - http://vsp.closetmai..._downloader.cab
O20 - Winlogon Notify: rqrsr - C:\WINDOWS\system32\rqrsr.dll

* After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
* Pressing any key will cause a 'Blue Screen of Death' this is normal, do not worry!
* Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Download and install CleanUp! http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click 'Options...'
Move the arrow down to 'Custom CleanUp!'
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

* Empty Recycle Bins
* Delete Cookies
* Delete Prefetch files
* Cleanup! All Users

Click OK. Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run an online virus scan at ActiveScan http://www.pandasoft.../activescan.htm

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HijackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

I've read about the hoops one has to go to with the XP CD, etc., to get into SafeMode, since I get a blank screen now. If I can get into SafeMode through the System Config Utility, will that work the same way to do these VundoFixes??

Don't do it through system config unless you are absolutely sure you know the password to get into safe mode (which you seem to since you got in here). The reason I say this is because if you don't know the password, you will be stuck in a loop with Safe Mode booting each time. Besides, I think this is the same safe mode that you went in to..so don't check that safeboot box.

Instead, hit F8 again...choose Safe Mode with Command Prompt instead to see if that works...if not, choose with Networking...

GreyKnight,
I hope you're still with me.

I was able to go into SafeMode in Network, and did as you instructed, except did not find the 04 log to delete. Ran cleanup and Panda. BTW, do you recommend purchasing ActiveScan Pro?

Here are the logs:

Did you run KillVundo yet? We will run it again as it seems to be there still. Download a new copy of VundoFix and delete old one.

Buy the Pro version if you want, but I would so no. I usually use all free programs on my system and it's doing a great job :tazz:

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK. Go to File->Export and save the registry somewhere as a backup. Close the Registry Editor now. Go to Start->Run and type in notepad and hit OK. Then copy and paste the following into Notepad:

REGEDIT4
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{6A6A1EAE-13E1-4DC7-8014-B7677EF6D47A}]

Save the file as "delete.reg". Make sure to save it with the quotes. Double click on it and choose Yes to merge it. You may delete the file afterwards.

Please download VundoFix.exe at http://www.atribune....ds/VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

* Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files.

* Empty Recycle Bins
* Delete Cookies
* Delete Prefetch files
* Cleanup! All Users

Hi Grey,

Before I received your new instructions, I had started my computer again, and it went into chkdsk, then safe mode option, then rebooted, etc., in a big circle, never properly loading. I assume I have a huge registry problem?

Anyway, I bought a new hard drive, and am in the process of reloading it. I am having someone remove the files from the other drive so I can at least recapture most of my info.

Do you have any idea how I can get the old, infected hard drive to work again?

Also, I would be very interested to know how I got this Trojan to begin with...do any of y'all have a clue how we've all become infected? Also, what antivirus software would you recommend putting on the new drive?

And, also, thank you so much for your help.

Wait, before we chuck this away :tazz:, what was the problem after the reboot? Did Safe Mode work? Was the problem just a black screen with Safe Mode written on all four corners?

Directly from the Symantec site:

Trojan.Vundo is a component of an adware program that downloads and displays pop-up advertisements. It is known to be installed by visiting a Web site link contained in a spammed email.

I recommend using Grisoft AVG (antivirus) and ZoneAlarm (firewall). Both are free and I have used them for many years without a complaint :)

Monday, when it would boot, it would go to the safe mode option page, but would not allow me to scroll up to safe mode...in other words, I couldn't move in that page, anything away from restart in normal Windows. Then it would reboot, to blue Dell screen, then go to Safe mode option page again. When I get the hard drive back tomorrow, I'd love to work on it some more to clean it up. They're pulling all my available files off of it, and I'm in the process of reloading a new hard drive.

I had the problem with the SafeMode in all four corners on Sunday when I was trying to load...that's when I went to Safe Mode Networking.

Can I use Grisoft with Norton? I've already installed ZoneAlarm. Thank you so much for your recommendations. Should I not bother with Spybot?

If you will get the data off that hard drive, then I suggest just formatting it when you backed up all the old data. Probably not worth the effort to fix it then...

No. I have seen lots of cases where AVG and Norton will collide with each other. The system will be bogged down a lot. I recommend using AVG, but if you still want to use Norton, make sure you don't install two firewalls either (since Norton also comes with one if you got that package).

Keep Spybot. Always good to use with Ad-aware. It will find things that Ad-aware sometimes can't - they work well side by side :tazz:

Any other problems/questions before I close this topic?

I think I'm good, Grey. Good idea to just format that hard drive, in case I ever need one again.

I'll download Spybot. Since Norton's loaded, I guess I'll keep it till it expires, then try Grisoft.

Again, thank you for all your assistance.
